Could it have to do with overall records?

    MobileBengal,

I have not looked up the records of the past SECCG losers who failed to make a New Years day bowl, but if my memory serves me correctly, it seems like those teams had more than 1 or 2 losses already before the SECCG. I know in 1997, Auburn had a few losses and the No. 2 and maybe No. 3 East teams had fewer losses than AU. I could be wrong though.

In the past, the winner of the West usually had the same amount of losses or more than the runner up in the East. Consequently, at the end of the SECCG the West representative was viewed as either the SEC Champion or just a pretty good team that was not as deserving of a New Years Bowl game as compared to the runner-ups in the East. Thus, the East runner ups took up the Non-BCS Jan. 1 Bowl slots. The same thing could and would happen if the East representative had a few losses coming into the SECCG.

I know that this scenario does not apply to LSU this year, but I think it is why none of the teams mentioned complained too much about falling out of Jan. bowl slots in prior years. Clearly, if LSU lost the SECCG this weekend they would still be coveted by the New Years Day bowl committees.

Last year, Arkansas lost the SECCG and fell all the way to the Music City Bowl. They could have chosen I-bowl but the team voted against it. I don't think Capital One made their decision until after the SECCG. So it could happen, but I think we are a much more attractive bowl team, though.

Arkansas was also a very weak West Champion. They got in on a hail mary, and it was with 3 losses. Georgia gave them another loss. I think it's a very different situation with an 11-2 LSU team if that were to be the case.

my understanding is the Capital One bowl is Obligated to take the #2 SEC option. #3-5 go to Cotton, Outback, and Peach. Then Music City and Independence get the left overs.

the Cotton bowl moved fast this year to get Ole Miss, and the Outback bowl made tons of money with Florida last year, thus the reinvite.

sorry Tennessee...Peaches for you! And from looking at their fan board, they are pissed about it.

IMO, they should be in the Cotton Bowl.

Well, they get the #2 pick, but they can pick any bowl eligible team.

AUDave, you are right, for the most part. Florida was 8-4 going into the Gator Bowl. Alabama was 8-3-1 going into the Gator Bowl. Arkansas was 8-4 going into the Carquest Bowl (though they started 8-2). Auburn was 9-3 going into the Peach. Arkansas was 9-4 last year going into the Music City. Though, I dont see much difference in a 9-3 Auburn and a 10-3 UGA (if they were to lose). Either way, I dont think this is the BCS's doing.
