Do you still get figs this time of year? I have a tree in my back yard and it has waited till just now to geaux off. I guess climate may have something to do with it but I do not ever recall figs fruiting this late in the year. Maybe it is the variety of fig???
When I was a kid it seemed like half the yards in Baton Rouge had a fig tree. Now I rarely see one. Has some disease killed them off. I haven't eaten fig newtons in a long time. I don't ever see them in stores
Everyone had fig tress because most knew how to make fig preserves. In our busy lives now, nobody wants to take the time to make it thus no trees get planted. Nothing better on a hot buttered biscuit than fig preserves !!!
I think figs are sorta like boiled peanuts. You either like em or you don't. I love the peanuts, never really cared for figs. We had a huge tree growing up. We would have to pick them for my dad. He loved em. Nobody else in the house had a use for em. I figured the more the birds got, the less I had to pick!
Fruit trees in general are not popular with modern landscapers apparently. You still see them in the old neighborhoods. My old neighborhood off campus had lots of fig trees and pecan trees and I miss them. Still there. Big seller.
i have several fruit trees and most are going to hell. between the ice storm a couple of years ago, and not having time to care for them, they look awful. i have a couple of pecan trees that are loaded. but last time they had this many pecans, the squirrels beat me to them. i dont have a fig tree. ive tried to grow them here, but no luck. i guess maybe our winters are too cold.
