Great memories for me about figs.

My grandmother lived in downtown Jackson, Looziana.

She had a fig tree next to her house, and put up fig preserves.

Then she made scratch biscuits for breakfast.

Man, those figs on the buttered biscuits STILL make me smile.

    It was AWESOME. :thumb:

I love figs! Both my grandparents and an aunt had fig trees while growing up. They made and sold fig preserves for as long as I can remember. Now, it's only my Aunt left with a fig tree, but she is too old to make it. I decided to make my own last year and it turned out pretty good. The only problem was I gave too many jars away to family and friends and didn't have enough for me.:hihi:

It's great with breakfast food ... biscuits, pancakes and waffles. But it's also good with pork. I make a sauce with it and pour it over thick pork chops or sliced pork loin. It has that sweet savory thing going on.

It's also a great topping for ice cream.

I've got a fig tree in the corner of my backyard that's very productive. Mostly, it feeds the birds and squirrels but a cousin picks a bunch for preserves. He says he makes huge fig preserve and peanut butter sandwiches to take to the deer stand. That sounds like something that will stick to your ribs.
My wife makes a fig cake, using fig preserves and it's pretty good.

Edit: Re the fig preserves recipe in the attachment, you really don't have to peel and quarter them. Just remove the stems.

You can't go wrong with figs! With figs you can make preserves, as everyone has mentioned, but my mom makes a strawberry jam out of them. Instead of whole figs in a preserve, she mashes them. The tree in my parents yard is probably 15' tall by 15' wide, so that makes a lot of figs and you need more to do with them except making preserves.

You ain't southern if you ain't ate no figs! ...bottom line...

Martha Stewart's Living has a whole article about figs in August's edition.

You can go buy it while wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses. Get the checkout girl to put it in a brown paper cover for you.

No way. That's on-par with buying kiddie porn.

Maybe you can buy it, scan the article, edit out references to Martha Stewart and post it here.

You're giving me way too much computer skill credit. This "scan" you speak of, is this some magical way to put information on a computer? I wouldnt know how to scan, edit content and post if my life depended on it.

Watch those figs closely as they ripen. You have to fight the birds for them. They friggin' love figs.

You're not lying there! I was helping mom pick figs (gets me more jars than the siblings ) and I tell, those mocking birds will dive bomb your a$$ ...and the tree I'm picking from you have to use a step ladder to get to the top. I tell ya, the next time I do it, I'm putting a badminton racket at the top of the ladder! Come get you sum birdie!!
