You can form an opinion and in the end...you may be right but you stated Saban won the Big 10 and even in his best year he didn't even crack 1st or 2nd....outside of that year...in 1999....he didnt even finish in the Top 4 one year before that from '95-'98

I stand corrected - that point doesn't change my opinion or your opinion one bit. What would you like me to say?

You can say whatever you like....in the end, you could be correct.

The difference between Nick and Les

Nick had been a DC in the NFL, and was highly respected and widely viewed as a defensive guru and borderline defensive genius. Miles did coach in the NFL, for 2 or 3 years, but as a tight ends coach for Dallas. Big difference in experience. I thought Saban was a great hire for LSU at the time. My opinion is that Skip views Miles as a safe hire -- may not be the most dynamic or known guy in the world, but he's solid, has experience, and won't come in here and destroy what Nick has built. I think even Skip would admit that Petrino had more "upside" than Miles, but, perhaps he felt Petrino did not have the maturity or experience of Miles and didn't trust him with the program. I think that is what it boils down to. Del Rio as well would have been a more dynamic selection, but, again, Skip probably felt Miles' maturity and experience trumped Del Rio's enthusiasm. Hey, I'm grabbing at straws, there has to be SOME logical reason why Skip is making this move. I would have at least interviewed Nolan and Childress, Crennel, see what shakes loose after the NFL season (will Shanahan be fired? Holmgren? Fisher?)

Folks are right, Skip has experience and good judgment, he is a winner, so, he must see something in Miles that I, and other fans, don't see. I will give Coach Miles a chance, but I'll be very interested to see who he names on his staff, that will be telling.

i remember i was excited for several reasons: 1. lsu hired a HC from another major program and a big 10 school - i know that this can be a difficult thing to do. 2. the tigers stepped up to the plate and paid what it took to get a HC from another program
i was excited about the saban hire but, didn't know anything about him but, i remember b/c he was a HC at big 10 program. he wasn't on my radar screen.

The fact remains is that in Jan 05 we are hiring a HC with fewer accomplishments and less credentials than the HC we hired in Nov 99.

I would like somebody in authority at LSU to explain why, after 5 years of incredible improvement in our program, LSU does this. If the reason is because "this is the best we could do under the circumstances", then fine, I'll accept that and I'll appreciate being told the truth.

If the answer is "this is the best we could do by 1 Jan 05 and we wanted the new guy in place to save our recruiting ranking, which has SUNK like the Titanic in the past two weeks", then I would question why we couldn't wait until Monday (after the NFL regular season) to see which NFL personnel might be available.

This whole coach selection process seems rushed.

The fact remains is that in Jan 05 we are hiring a HC with fewer accomplishments and less credentials than the HC we hired in Nov 99, AND I WANT TO KNOW WHY.

I am not sure why so many think that we didn't ask around the NFL to several candidates. If Del Rio was interested, the obvious answer would be yes....

    Yep, you're right.

Saban was considered so terrible when he was at Michigan State that Bill Polian tried to hire him as head coach. :dis:

What's painfully obvious while observing this entire process, is that we really miss Mark Emmert. He was heavily involved in getting Saban here in '99, and he pounced on Willingham at U-Dub a few weeks ago. Not to mention the good hire he made while at UConn (Jim Calhoun).
