Not denying that some artificial coloring comes into play but it is not that simple. Cheese starts off white with a yellow tint and darkens with age because the butter fat content increases overtime. Mold also cause changes in color.

Artificial coloring is also used in some cheeses and the Bixen pigment comes from the South American Bixa flower.

I watch too much Food Network.

My mom takes breadsticks and puts garlic butter on them, wraps them in bacon and then bakes them. Those things are AMAZING.

    Also Combos.

I agree to some extent but the cheese in question is cheddar. Cheddar is the color it is because that is how people want it. I have had many cheddars most all were between bone white and pale yellow except for the ones from England, Ireland and Scotland. Those were colored orange and the ones colored orange in the USA I consider a lower quality wannabe cheddar trying to copy the better Cheddar from England. The Canadians make some exceptional Cheddar and there are some great cheddars made in the USA. A majority of Cheddar cheeses are coated with wax or wrapped in cheesecloth and a natural rind is discouraged to grow on purpose. There is going to be an exception here and there but this is the mainstream way cheddar is produced. Again I agree to some extent, the type of cow and the diet will make a difference in the milk as will the season the milk is harvested but it makes the most difference in taste than color. The cheese will take on the color of the milk. I watch Food Network and went to culinary school :)

for about the past ten days, i have had two cravings.

the salty one is for roasted peanuts. i would kill for the cajun hot nuts, but i cant find them here. so i have been eating just plain old roasted peanuts.

for sweets i keep craving marshmallows. because i have a gas cooktop i roast them over the flame and just eat toasted marshmallows. or, if i want to get "fancy" i make smores. sometimes i just pop a couple of plain old raw marshmallows.

    this cannot be healthy!

Ridiculously amazing. Only thing I like better to just sit and snack on is:
