Just passing along what I just saw and heard: Jay Glazer, Mr. "Fox NFL Insider", just said on Totally Football (Fox Sports) that Nick Saban has placed a few phone calls in recent weeks asking pro personnel he knows if, should he take the Miami job, they'd be interested in joining his staff. Glazer also said that, while Nick is talking to Miami, it's nothing formal, just talk.
this knot just won't leave the pit of my stomach. been 2 weeks now. why is that. ya know, Im the one who says, "Ill wish him well". I think I am going through the denial/anger/reality stages even before i need to.
I havent really ever been nervous about all this.....til now. I have even seen some insiders on other boards a bit nervous. I hope he puts an end to the speculation soon.
tirk I've gotta agree 100% with philter here. as I said in another thread, I don't attribute the success of miami in the mid to late 1990's to butch davis. for one thing, miami recruits itself. you don't have to be a master recruiter to lure big names to UM. furthermore, butch daivs didn't even win an NC at miami but larry coker, with essentially the same players (shockey, McKennie, dorsey portis, etc.), won the NC the year after davis left. philter is exactly right about the lack of trust between davis and his players in cleveland (when you've got a whole team claiming this, it aint about "overpaid underacheiving losers"). btw - who's fault is it that these players as you claim are "underacheiving"? yep, butch davis. not only has davis burned bridges with his players, he has run away good football people like ron wolf and dwight clark who refused to work for him. don't you see a slight pattern here? top it off, with 3 first round busts under his leadership (not to mention numerous free agent busts), you can quickly surmise why cleveland is void of talent with a terrible record. if you dig a little deeper into the davis track record, it aint that rosy. I realize people like to jump on the bandwagon with guys like davis because he had success at a big time program like miami but just look at miami's recent history - all coaches have had success at miami while they were in the big east (just look at the teams they played and look at their record now in the ACC). I know davis is a sexy pick, but you'd be a fool to discount what occurred in cleveland under davis' stewardship. LSU can do alot better than butch davis.
I think most fans tend to forget that Davis was strapped with probation and scholarship reductions when he arrived at Miami the first couple of years. I don't care who it is, a reduction in scholarships will hurt any program. I agree that recruiting to Miami is a lot easier than most other places, but nonetheless, Davis left Coker in excellent shape. Look at how well Coker did with Davis' recruits his first couple of years ... now look at how they have dropped off a bit the last two years. It sort of reminds me of Archer doing really well for a couple of years after Arnsbarger (sp?) left ... although I think Coker is a much better coach. I'm not saying Davis is the right guy here, but I think he did a helluva job restoring Miami's program and bringing some respectability to a place that was nothing more than thug U.
friday, you can agree all you want about davis but the difference is college and pro and you can claim nothing specfically about davis except he didnt win an NC an took over the Saints North Team. He recruited well at Miami but it doesnt equate to player personnell in the NFL. Apples and oranges. NFL underachievers are pros not kids. its their job. Yeah he was the coach but once again, two different worlds. His players played well for him at Miami and Coker is showing signs of letting that program slip. tigerwins is correct in the scholarships and thug U situation when he took over. He turned that fiasco around which erickson knew was one big mess. Overlook and compare all you want but all your arguments holds little weight. Yet, I can agree that doesn't mean he's a lock for a winning coach here. Maybe he won't adjust or recruit well. I don't think he's a good game day coach. However, you must start with winners at top programs with no sanctions or illegal recruiting violations to start then work your way down when you are in LSU's position. terry robiskie, no. rich rodriguez, no. We need a proven winner. Who that is, I am not sure. I guess he can't leave since it seems we simply need Nick Saban. I sure hope those Tuberville rumors die. I'd rather shoot myself.
