The Iran-Iraq war 22SEP80 to 20AUG88. The war was disastrous for both countries, stalling economic development and disrupting oil exports, and costing an estimated million lives. Iraq was left with serious debts to its former Arab backers, including $14 billion loaned by Kuwait, a debt which contributed to Hussein's 1990 decision to invade Kuwait. The end of the war left the borders unchanged.

On 2AUG90, at 0200(two in the morning), Iraqi forces swept into Kuwait. Resistance from Kuwait was minimal. The ruling al-Sabah family fled and Kuwait fell under Iraqi control. The next day, Iraqi forces massed along the border between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia in an area called the "Neutral Zone

The Saudi dominated OIC (Organization of the Islamic Conference) had been meeting when Saddam invaded Kuwait. The conference voted to condemn the Iraqi invasion and to express its solidarity with Kuwait. However, five members (Iraq naturally, but also the PLO, Jordan, and the Sudan, with Libya abstaining) did not vote for the resolution. Saddam was later seen as having driven a wedge deep within Sunni Muslim unity provoking the crisis in Saudi Arabia that eventually led to the rise of radicals like Usama bin Laden. Saddam himself exploited Islamic rhetoric in his claim that annexing Kuwait had been a religious duty, a jihad, since the al-Sabah family (Kuwait's rulers) had ruled over an artificial state set up by the British. Saddam claimed that his jihad had liberated Kuwait from dominance by Western infidels. (see Gilles Kepel, Jihad: The Trail of Political Islam (Cambridge, MA: Belknap Press, 2002), 208f.)

[IMG]There are some observers who believe that this statue shows Saddam waving to the people. The fact is that this guy is showing his countrymen and the rest of the Arab world that he is the "Hand of the Arab" And the people of Iraq and the PLO did his bidding.[IMG]

The problem with your statement is the same problem the leftists have in this
    country.

If you'll do the research about WWII and our occupation in Germany at that time you will find the same thing that has happened in Iraq the past year.
NO-ONE likes to have an occupied force in their country.

Your side only is looking at the short term of things such as no WMD's.
Won't your side look like a bunch of fools if WMD's are found somewhere in
    Iraq tomorrow or next month.

If you look at the long term of things you will find the Iraqis will be very grateful and thankful for us getting rid of Saddam and his Nazi Regime once
the dust settles and they all live better lives and their lives will improve
and they will learn how wonderful life can be in a Democracy.

You ask the children of today there tomorrow, such as young adults and teenagers and you will find they will be grateful in the future.

They have no clue what life is like tomorrow, all they know is what life was like yesterday such as Saddam and what life is like right now with the insurgents there.

Give them a little time just like what happened in Germany a few years after the end of WWII.

I don't see any difference in this situation and the occupation of us in Germany and France during WWII.

Look at long-term not short-term, btw, long-term for you and I is short-term
    for history.

So, now you can predict the future. You know what I have a problem. Iraq didn't pose an imminent threat. So, Bush says we freed them from a ruthless dictator. We gave them freedom. They raid the streets and kill our troops and all you can say is one day they'll thank us. We are approaching 1000 troop deaths and over 6000 casualties of war. Excuse me if I wanted to see tears of joy and Iraqi's thanking us. I have a close relative in Iraq.

If we don't pull out of Iraq, it's going to get as bad as Detroit.

Fast forward 60 years the Democrats are claiming we are "cutting and running" from Germany.

    1. I can't predict the future but I'm smart enough to know that if you study
    history, history repeats itself.
I've studied history and every time so far people have been grateful when
they have been freed from oppression.

You must also have a problem with John Kerry too then because he said last
week that he would've voted for the war whether Iraq had WMD's or not.

You say that "they" raid the streets and kill our troops.
Can you prove who "they" are?
Are you sure "they" are all Iraqis and not insurgents or some renegades looking to take over the country?

You seem to know alot about what is going on in Iraq, have you been there
or served your country over there?

1,000 dead soldiers and 6,000 casualties of war?
    In over a years time?
Not to take away from the individuals but this is a low rate compared to any
other war such as WWII and Vietnam.

Let me ask you how many troops died during the Liberation of Europe such
    as D-Day?
How many American soldiers died during the exercise before D-Day?
How many people died during the occupation of Germany?
