LSU was the main part of the story because they had a kid that was willing to talk. LSU and Alabama are notorious for this, this is no secret even if it was a secret to you. Now you point on Chris Garrett is mostly irrelevant, but either way 2 players were going home. From what I heard, ESPN will be doing more on oversigning. Of course, LSU is not changing it's behavior for 2011 and is actually making this worse for themselves. I would expect more stories on this for 2011 especially with them trying to sign 23. The Garretts seem to dispute your events of the situation but like I said it's mostly irrelevant to the story, I would say their story holds water considering the evidence available.
The problem is, why fix what ain't broken. In regards to my previous post along with LaSalle's it is the very reason the SEC is the best conference in all of college football. If these kids want to stay on the team, mediocrity will not cut it. You have to be the best, and perform with the best to stay with the best. If not, sorry. Kinda the same thing the NFL and all other professional teams do. They over draft or have too many players in camp, they then weed out the ones who aren’t the best. Whether it be a veteran or a new draftee, only the best get to stay. I wonder why?
Just a thought..if I was coaching for four million a year, you can bet your butt I would oversign. My job depends on winning. I would try to be as fair as possible to the kids though. But I would do tons of research on ----- 1) average number of kids who flunk out 2) average number of kids who quit after realizing that they just never would make it. 3) average number to leave early for the pros. 4) how many will run home when they realize that they are not the BMOC anymore, that everyone on the team is GOOD. 5) leave room for injuries too 6) get the idea? I would want all the stats I could get. It's a numbers game. I would not want to hurt a kid on purpose, but I would sure do my best to protect myself. I guess the ideal situation would be if one could be a contender for the title and be able to keep one scholly under limits in case of emergency.
If nothing is broken then there is nothing wrong with the story and if they do another next week you shouldn't have a problem with it. I think there is a problem, first of all NCAA has to much power, and you get into even deeper issues which the federal government is already looking into the BCS. As far as what I think should be done, well if a school has a right to not renew I think the player should have a right to not renew without a penalty. If school A offers a one year scholarship, you go for one year and then can pick another school for year 2.
Sure, might work for a while but people are now starting to show what happens at the end of the process. And you go from being a winning coach to a unemployed douche if the average kid figures it out. Might work, might backfire just like lying and cheating might work.
For the record, I don't have a problem with the story. In fact all it does, in my opinion, is reinforce how tough it is to be a part of a top 25 team. Perform or sorry you can become a Garrett. Who sounds like a cry baby on ESPN. It would be one thing if he was a top player, but the kid couldn't cut it in a D II school. You say if not him it would have been someone else, and you are right. It would have been the person just above him, who will probably lose their scholly this year if they haven't improved enough to stay on the team, over last year. And for the record the feds can investigate the BCS all day every day. The BCS and the NCAA are not the same entities. One has no power over the other. So good luck with investigating the BCS and thinking it will have any effect on the NCAA.
You are basically reinforcing the story. You are saying if a kid is not good enough they force them out, which is really what the story is about. However, it goes exactly opposite of what the NCAA says amateur college sports is about ie Student Athletes... with the Student being first. Yes the feds have been investigating the BCS and I would not be surprised by the NCAA next. I would not be surprised by major changes in the next 10 years. I could go on and on about the NCAA but I will spare you. lol If a school can choose not to renew, then the player should have a right to not renew and still go elsewhere without a penalty. IMHO. I mean if we are going to operate this like a business, make it a business.
How so? As long as a coach wins games and the program stays strong he won't be a douche to the fans or students or football players for that matter. If you get cut from the team a player can transfer I'm sure the average kid can figure that out, but in the mean time I'm sure the recruit will stick with LSU and take their chances for prime time in the SEC.
