This is too much fun.... we're putting together the official Gene Chizik Legacy over on our board. So far, it's pretty much that fact that he posted a winning record against only one team... South Dakota State... but, then again, they only played once.
I agree that it would've been interesting to see if Bo Rein would've found success @ LSU, but of course, it's only speculation. Stovall had a couple of good years, as did Arnsparger, Archer, and Dinardo, but I still feel like our firing of Cholly Mac had karma biting us in the butt for 20 years. But that's just me. When I read It Never Rains in Tiger Stadium last week, it brought that era back with amazing clarity. I remember being in the stands at one of my dad's games back in the late 70's when Mac came to watch the game. A woman (I won't call her a lady) stood up and yelled, "Two bits. Four bits. Six bits. A dollar. All for McClendon, lay down and 'waller.'" I was only 8 or 9, but I remember that nasty woman perfectly. My dad always was a big fan of Charlie Mac's.
Never let it be said that AU does anything half-assed. When they screw something up, they go ALL THE WAY! :hihi:
Pete Carroll was featured on 60 minutes last night. It was interesting how everybody in Trojan Nation thought it was a horrible idea that they hired him as their head coach because of how much he sucked as an NFL head coach
Yep. This was the first thing I thought about when I heard him say that. As much as it might pain me to say it, that piece completely altered my view on ol' Petey. Seems like a pretty doggone good guy, to me.
I was a huge Cholly Mac fan, to me he was LSU football. I wish we played you more often back then. I was shocked when he was terminated and felt it was a sad day for LSU. I thought Bo Rein was a great hire for LSU and would be a tremendous upgrade. Its kind of funny his successor at NC State was Monte Kiffin who posted a 16-17 record while there. Bo was a heck of a recruiter and it was another sad day for LSU when he died.
Yes, he was LSU football. He was a larger than life sort of coach, who wasn't appreciated because he could so rarely beat his coach and mentor, the Bear. But how many coaches had winning records vs. Bryant? Were there any?
Charles Barkley all over AU re this hire: Barkley, who works as an NBA analyst for Turner Network Television, said he spoke with Gill before Gill interviewed with Auburn officials last week. "We talked about the whole race thing in Alabama," Barkley said. "I told him it's there and it's going to be anywhere you go. I told him you can't not take the job because of racism. He was worried about being nothing more than a token interview. He was concerned about having a white wife. It's just very disappointing to me." http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3770769
