Last season lack of respect was a real motivating factor. This year as defending National Champs we get automatic respect so we have to manufacture imagined slights for motivation.

The Pac-10 football schedule has some interesting matchups in 2004. The Trojans seek to defend their conference and national title while their rivals would like nothing more than to knock down Pete Carroll's crew.

Cast your vote in the poll to the left and help us decide which is the best Pac-10 game on the 2004 schedule.

August 28 - USC at Virginia Tech
USC begins defense of it national title. All things considered, The Trojans have a "light" schedule making the national title is their's to lose. Trojans would like to set the tone in Blacksburg.

September 11 - Utah at Arizona
Mike Stoops era begins for real (we don't count their game against Northern Arizona), against a very good Utah team. Wildcat fans hope the Oklahoma genius can make similar magic in Tucson.

September 18 -- Oregon at Oklahoma
A trip to Norman in September gives the Ducks a quick test to see how good they really are.

September 25 -- Washington at Notre Dame
It's been 27 years since U-Dub has had a losing record -- how the Huskies fare in South Bend should be the indicator of making it 28 years. With a young team and a tough schedule (all without Slick Rick) Washington needs to win games they should to get back to a bowl game and right the program's ship.

October 2 -- Cal at Oregon State
Cal's third of four road trips in the first five games. Bears have their work cut out for them in Corvallis but must battle the Beavers for the nod of true challenger to USC.

October 9 -- Cal at USC
Cal's third road trip in as many games. Facing an angry USC team in the Coliseum looking to avenge last year's loss after going to Southern Miss and Oregon State is no small task.

November 6 -- USC at Oregon State
The Beavers have Pac-10 title aspirations, it may be a longshot, but catching the Trojans at home helps. USC will be unbreakable at home, but they've historically had a few struggles on the road. The Trojans will be coming from a test at Washington State the week prior, the Beavers can only hope the Cougs wore them out a little bit.

November 20 -- Oregon at Oregon State
Ducks fly into Corvallis for The Civil War. Home field advantage is a huge factor in this one. Ducks took last year's in Eugene ... Beavers took 2002 in Corvallis ... Ducks took 2001 in Eugene ... Beavers took 2001 in Corvallis ...

November 20 -- U. of Wash. at Wash. State
All's fair in love, war ... and the Apple Cup. The 97th meeting between the state rivals, UW has won the last six. Cougs would hate to lose another in Wazzu.

November 27 -- Notre Dame at USC
A once exciting rivalry may have lost it's luster (as we doubt the Fighting Irish can come within double digits of the defending champ), but still one of the classics of college football.

Generally, the word out here is that there is an East Coast bias. Of course, that has been tempered with the California bias that you mention. Even though USC won the Rose Bowl, there is hardly a buzz out here in everyday life. Sure, the media types love to talk about it and talk it up, but few else really seem to care about any of it. And that's pretty funny about these guys out here smoking condoms. Where'd you come up with that one? It is clear that La. fans are much more passionate about football than any of these clowns will ever be. Well, at least most of them.
