Red has made a better case for it than you have against it... and I guess you're conceding the rest of the conversation.

I imagine people got sick of us bickering back and forth over semantics a while ago. I am still not going to read the bill (I don't have the time), and as such I will not say with a certainty that I would vote against the bill. I can say it is highly likely I would vote against it. I don't understand why that isn't enough for, but that is an impasse it appears you and I can't overcome.

I really wanted to say the following, however...

I believe things need to be changed at a fundamental level. I don't believe all government regulation is bad, but I do believe the implementation of that regulation is way off base. I do believe global warming should be taken seriously and don't mind a set of regulations being put in place to change the way we consume energy. I don't buy into the premise that the science of global warming is one big sham, but it should be tempered by the degree of certainty at which it is presented.

But instead of giving the illusion that we will be able to fully stop damaging practices, I believe we should say upfront that there is no way we are going to be able to keep our thumbs on everyone, and we really don't want to. Similar to police setting up speed traps, not every violator gets pulled over, only those that are statistical outliers, those worst offenders get ticketed.

Instead of forcing companies to change, it is better that we prod them but allow them to come along as they can or will. Of course, we are competing with countries that can't or won't take this into consideration, so as a people, we must consider what the value of trading with those countries is. I don't believe we can practice free trade with countries that don't take the health of their environment or their people into consideration. I'm willing to take the hit in cost of goods for that. I already believe we don't produce enough things domestically.

I am interested in having a serious conversation with you and I am committed to making state rights stronger and decentralizing power in a number of instances, but there is some role for the federal government to play in our lives. Rather than make federal guidelines in all cases it would probably be better to allow states to set their guidelines within some boundaries. Water from Arkansas flows into Louisiana, air from Mississippi floats into Louisiana, so there is a need for some federal guidelines. But whether you want to believe it or not, I am against a big federal government and big federal spending in most cases.
