    It's a giant surprise.

Only a couple of weeks ago he said he was coming back for his senior year.

No kidding though, the Duck's backups seem to have a much higher upside than Thomas.

This is going to be great, QB competition is lots of fun.

Canzano: Ducks' Darron Thomas makes decision that's right on the money | OregonLive.com

By sports opinion columnist, John Canzano

....Also, down deep, Thomas knows backup Bryan Bennett is hungry, has more upside than he, and will push him for playing time next season. Coach Chip Kelly doesn't make playing-time promises. The competition starts over this spring, so there's some risk in Thomas coming back for another season....

....While there are areas of Thomas' game that might get improvement from another season in college, he must know, down deep, that Bennett has better tools and more eligibility.

Some are still hoping that Thomas wakes up today and changes his mind. But I suspect Thomas knows that if he's going to realize his dream of playing in the NFL someday, he needs to try something new to get there. One more season in Kelly's offense and, best case, we'll have the same questions about his accuracy, consistency, arm strength and whether he's really a star, or just playing in an offense that gives people video-game statistics.

Worse case, Bennett beats him out.

Oregon is going to be fine without Thomas. The bigger question is what happens to Thomas without Oregon. Clemens was replaced by Dennis Dixon, who was replaced by Jeremiah Masoli, who was replaced by Thomas. Thomas will be replaced by Bennett. And so, like the others, we'll find out if he's talented enough to stand on his own....

I think you guys will be fine.

Bennett stepping up to QB .. and the "other" Thomas stepping in to fill James' position.

Yep .. I can see more basketball scores next year. :D

Son of a bitch,... the fuskies nab another fine young coach, and a fantastic recruiter. Washington with 3 recent great assistant coach hires.

Rats! and kudos. . Sarkesian seems to know what he's doing up in Seatte. It's good that purple's passion is raging again.

[IMG] . I suppose most of you Tiger fans are still singing the blues. I sure was last year about this time. I started feeling better, dreaming about the LSU-Oregon game. I kinda imagined that game with a different ending though.

My take on the Oregon mood, Duck fans are excited about the fight for starting QB. The Darren Thomas era is over, who's next? Let the competition begin. I love it.

Signing day in just two weeks,..

    Go Ducks

    Oregon QB #8 Marcus Mariota

Oregon Football, breaking sports updates, NCAA and PAC-12 news, prep sports | Eugene, Oregon | Springfield Oregon | The Register-Guard

....Mariota was a three-star prospect according to Rivals.com and Scout.com. But in Oregon’s eyes, given the way he fit into the Ducks’ spread-option scheme, Mariota was a five-star addition.

“He’s the perfect fit for what we do offensively,” UO coach Chip Kelly said on signing day a year ago.

Mariota said familiarity with the Ducks’ concepts, and the chance to both run and pass as a quarterback, attracted him to Oregon. So, too, did the chance to play with the other skill position players in his recruiting class, such as running back De’Anthony Thomas, tight end Colt Lyerla and a trio of talented receivers.

“It made it exciting,” Mariota said. “I don’t have to do much; I just have to get them the ball.”

[IMG].....I know little about this kid, except the little info I've gleaned from Duck blogs. What I hear the most is, "wow".

Mariota's Oregon # is the same as that worn by J. Masoli,.. which means, my yellow #8 jersey will now be happily un-retired.
