The Pac-12 presidents and chancellors emerged from their conclave on Friday without a firm decision on the football season. The group will meet again next Thursday. And a lot of us wondered what the hold up might be.

Health restrictions?.. Universities facing different landscapes?.. Bad optics of appearing to follow the Big Ten?

Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News reported on social media that many in the Pac-12 wanted to start the season on Oct. 31. The conference hoped to make that splashy announcement today. But the CEO Group couldn’t reach a consensus, sparking deep frustration.

Feels like Nov. 7 is the start date... But why not sooner?

I expect the Pac-12 to be on the field on Nov. 7 playing a football game. Whether it’s six games or eight games in the season, we’ll soon find out.

Former Oregon defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti coached in the conference in a career that spanned four decades. The typical college football program of today has more optimal equipment, meeting spaces and resources. I asked Aliotti on Saturday morning how long it would take a football program to get a team ready to play... As in, could a Pac-12 team safely play a game in just four weeks?

“Absolutely. Six weeks is overkill,” Aliotti said. “We didn’t even know our players names and were more than ready in that amount of time.”
