College football's best running back? Ducks say it's Royce Freeman

Oregon's Gary Campbell, the dean of college football running backs coaches, (at Oregon for 34 years), doesn't spend his free time analyzing the tape of Stanford's Christian McCaffrey, LSU's Leonard Fournette or Florida State's Dalvin Cook, all of whom finished in the top-seven in Heisman Trophy voting last season, to know how Ducks junior running back Royce Freeman compares.

"Why should I?" Campbell said. "Different people do different things with different guys. I may get one of those other guys in our program and he doesn't do anything. Royce does for us what we need to have done and so I don't compare him to anybody else.

"Everybody has their opinion and I got mine about him: He's the best damn guy in the country as far as I'm concerned."

For Les Miles and LSU, football means a return to normalcy

.....It has been more than nine months since Miles survived a not-so-secret coup attempt that nearly cost him his job. With the Tigers mired in a three-game losing streak heading into their 2015 regular-season finale against Texas A&M, there were widespread media reports that a group of disgruntled and influential boosters were prepared to pay $15 million to fire him..... Only after the Tigers defeated the Aggies 19-7 at Tiger Stadium on Nov. 28 did someone in power at LSU finally end the speculation and say Miles was going to remain their coach......

Bad bowl loss, new coordinator, new attitude: How 2016 is feeling like 2007 for the Oregon Ducks

......In 2006, the Ducks started 4-0 and reached a No. 11 ranking before losing for the first time. Two weeks later, another loss came. Then the season collapsed in Week 10, when a 35-10 loss to USC ignited a four-game losing streak that was capped by a 38-8 loss to BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl.
.....The Ducks weren't ranked in the 2007 preseason AP poll, mostly due to the bad end to 2006
....."It was down. It was really down in that locker room," Agyeman said. "It was like the locker room after the Alamo Bowl.".
.....The record will show the Ducks went 7-6 in 2006, but the last of those losses hung like a cloud as the program went through changes. Offensive coordinator Gary Crowton left for LSU in the offseason and the Ducks hired Chip Kelly,
.....The Ducks went from unranked at the start of the season to No. 2 in the nation by Week 10 with a 8-1 record. Of course the season would go off the rails with three consecutive losses following the injury to Dixon, the star quarterback, but overall 2007 was the first glimpse of what Oregon would morph into over the next decade: a powerhouse.
....."National championship," Agyeman said immediately when asked the "What if" question about Dixon. "Not even close. Teams were afraid of us."
.....Nobody at Oregon is forecasting 2016 to have any resemblance to 2007 going forward. There are too many variables. The Ducks have a new quarterback, three redshirt freshmen on the offensive line, six new starters on the front seven and a host of Pac-12 opponents projected to finish ahead of them.
