This was the stumbling block for every NFL job Pete Carroll interviewed for until he was given it with the Seahawks. I suspect this season is when the chickens come home to roost.
The biggest loss for the Hawks was Unger. Wilson is running for his life back there. While the Saints really suck and miss Graham, they really only miss him because there is no one else to throw the ball to. Cooks isn't a 1. The Hawks defense though surprises me.
But you have control over the process. Depends on whether a coach is good at it or not. Jimmy Johnson built the Cowboys into a 90's dynasty through shrewd trading. When he was coach of the Dolphins he wanted to trade Dan Marino but the owner wouldn't let him. So he was stuck with running Don Shula's pass heavy offense and Miami never developed a running game to go with a great passing attack the way the Cowboys did.
Making Russell Wilson the highest paid QB in the NFL was just insane. He is good but not nearly that good. The Seahawks are 2-3 now. Carroll won't get fired this year no matter what but could he decide to go back to USC?
But when you fail, which is more likely in the NFL than not, you have no escape goat. The only direction to point the finger is directly at Chip Kelly.
Kelly is certainly not as good at personnel acquisition and management as Jimmy Johnson was. When, and not if Kelly gets fired by the Eagles he will have a high paying college head coaching job the next day.
Hell yes there will be. Look at the retread HCs in the NFL. Why does Rob Ryan have the Bills? Most owners either don't care enough or haven't a clue on what it takes to put a winning team together they hire a 'name' for safety.
