Washington and Jefferson had compensating virtues, including the establishment of this country, itself, and a constitutional structure that would eventually allow the abolition of slavery. Slave ownership and fighting to perpetuate slavery were not their defining social or political characteristics. Their statues don't stand around this country because they fought for slavery. Can't say the same about Robert E. Lee, who contributed absolutely nothing to the constitutional structure or long-term welfare of this country, and who fought to destroy our Union and fought to propagate slavery. His statue DOES stand around this country because he fought for slavery, and it's an affront to patriotic and decent Americans.
