Good analysis too from Wolf/BMoney. That's simply stunning. That's truly playing to not lose.

JR is good enough to win a lot of games for us, it's foolish to replace him after one off game. You want to be guaranteed 4 losses with RP? You'll hammer the staff even harder for pulling JR for RP if that happened, that's a fact.

He showed last year many times he has the capability to lead this team to a comback, and he did it this year...my complaint is why wasn't he allowed the chance to do it with 2 mins left? If Miles doesn't have the confidence in JR to let him try, then that doesn't speak well to our QB situation.

I will say it again... I want a "smart" QB versus a play maker. LSU does not need a phenom at QB, but rather a smart field general to get the ball to the talent around him. Yes maybe the play calling was conservative and enough on this board has been said about that, but you have to know, as the field general, there is 10 seconds left in the half, you have no time outs and a field goal would have been good. He was trying to do too much on his own and should have been more aware of the game situation. Not knocking his talent, but his ability to understand his team’s needs. Clausen certainly does not have the talent of JR but he looked more in control of his team to me.

he gets runner up or honorable mention at least. Aaron Brooks clone, playing at the same level as last year. So how many games do you think he should get before he improves? when a 3rd string QB looks better than your blue chip third year man it's time to smell the roses. the time to produce is now. Clausen did.

Who is that on our team?
Yep, huge mistake by Russell. I also want a coach who understands that you can't run the field goal unit on the field in that situation. We had a much better chance of stopping the clock by lining up and grounding the ball. Both the QB and coach should understand what to do in these situations.

Those 3 points would have come in handy...

Two words for you: Matt Mauck

Sure, he wasn't the best, most talented QB even on LSU's roster at the time, but he played smart and was a leader. We need a smart QB that can make the plays and keep us in the game without thowing cr@p passes and not making stupid mistakes (i.e. running out of bounds with 7 seconds on the clock at the end of the half)....come on...

The conservative play calling was BS too. Look at Okie State under Les Miles last year. Two games come to mind where OSU blew big leads while directing a more conservative 2nd half...Texas and Texas Tech.

This loss is a combination of coaching and poor QB play. Don't get me wrong, I think that the defense is still not the caliber it was last season, but we did have the injuries at LB and some defensive backs that graduated.

All in all, we could be in for a long season. I'd be happy with any NY's Day bowl game at this point...

No, Russell shares blame. He blew his time management before halftime that cost us the winning score--not the coach's fault. He also threw an interception that allowed Tennessee to score--not the coach's fault. His poor field generalship may have led the coaches to dumb down the offense--just like they had to do last year.

The poor play calling were the coaches fault, but the poor play was Russel's alone.

Agreed . . . but . . . When Tennessee had a starter who didn't perform, Fulmer had an effective quarterback to put in the game and won it because of that. There is no point in having depth if you don't use it. Flynn and Perrilloux need to see the field and get some PT if we get well ahead against State and Vanderbilt.

We just may need them some time soon.

We keep running these stupid 5 yard outs, but JR is a downfield passer. We need to run some 15 yard corner routes and stuff like that. Those are the kind of routes we were running vs Iowa when he looked so good. The 5 yard dink and dunk stuff is not his cup of tea.

He must develop a taste for this tea and quickly. The short-drop, quick-pass ball control offense is hard to defend against as we saw last night. It was Mauck's bread and butter.
