I think a lot of people from the suburbs of New Orleans consider themselves to be from New Orleans even if they didnt live in the city proper. I grew up in Belle Chasse and always considered myself from New Orleans. When I was growing up I never knew there was animosity with cities outside New Orleans. Its only as I got older I would hear snide comments about "those people from New Orleans", etc. I never really understood it although I never lived anywhere else in Louisiana long enough to get it I guess. I didnt know people from New Orleans considered themselves better than others in the state because we didnt and I never heard that. Part of my perception could be clouded from the fact I have now lived outside of New Orleans longer than I ever lived there but when I go back I dont get that impression either. Go figure...
Historically, yes, but legally no, they are not. It's been a single City/Parish government since the 40's. The city has sprawled all over the parish, there is almost no rural land remaining. White = 51.4 % Black = 44.9 % Other = 2.6% The Baton Rouge Metropolitan Area is: 63.03% White 34.13% African American 0.23% Native American 2.84% Other
Denham Springs is in Livingston Parish, you know, get a map. You aren't being realistic if you imagine that people in the Baton Rouge suburbs don't relate to Baton Rouge over New Orleans. Baton rouge is and has always been whiter, more protestant, and has more English heritage than New Orleans and its mixed-race, catholic, Creole/French/Spanish culture. That is my point.
True, but i know a whole bunch of people from Baker or Zachary that do not want to say they are from Baton Rouge. hmmm. funny the Baton Rouge City Police don't do crap for me where I live. If the City and the Parish are the same thing, then the city police should be able to take my calls. (Jefferson area). Why are there 2 different police departments for the "City" of Baton Rouge? Red, you are just playing with semantics now. Those official census numbers show that even back in 2000 blacks had a majority in city of Baton Rouge. When some one says New York, they are not talking about the entire tri-state area.
everyone who hates new orleans, you probably wont have to worry about it for too much longer, with the wetlands disappearing at alarming rates, New Orleans is playing russian roulette with mother nature. Save the wetlands.
Tradition. It's a waste if you ask me, because is one city government with one mayor. The numbers are real. You can play with gerrymandering all you want but the outcome is the same. Baton Rouge is whiter, more protestant, and more Anglo than New Orleans--anyway you want to cut it.
No one was arguing whether BR was more WASP than NO. The initial question was if BR was >50% black. Also where did you get your numbers? Mine were at least quoted from the US Census that proved, at least in 2000, that Baton Rouge was >50% black.
I completely agree that it is a waste, but it proves ,at least on 1 point, that the parish of EBR and the City of BR are not the same. I also find it amazing that the Sheriffs Dept computers and the BRPD computers are not compatible. Unless a parish is completely made up of 1 city and nothing more, the concept of the City/Parish Government is a joke and a failure. If a person lives outside the city limits then that person is treated as a lesser citizen. For example, look into the Fiber Optic Network that the Lafayette City/Parish Government is trying to set up. Only a business or individual, inside the city limits can gain access to it, every one else need not apply, except to help pay for it.
When people most think of New Orleans the surrounding areas are included like Meterie and Kenner. Same goes for baton Rouge with Baker, Central, Zachary... Now that said... NSFW...language YouTube - BATON ROUGE
