Recruiting yes, DL play and development yes, overall defense who knows. I can tell you one thing getting a better pass rush and some disruption in the middle from better DT play would make the entire defense better. I believe O will get it done up front, but Steele's impact is such an unknown it's hard to call the staff changes a net improvement.

    Too early to tell.

Chavis was one of the architects of our 2011 defense, which was one of the best in CFB history.

Coach O and Steele's resume's show them to be better recruiters than CHavis and Haley.....

    Push???

I think our front 7 will play with much better fundamental technique for tackling, shedding blockers, etc. I think we definitely upgrading on the recruiting front, but I think the bigger takeaway will be overall improved play.

i believe that as well. The DL will get better, just by getting better players and better coaching.
Im scared about Steele, schemes are everything to a defense.

Screw it, I voted YES. I think the D needs a little shake-up. @lsu-i-like hit the nail on the head... we now have coaches who WANT to be here. I think it could be our finest hour, but I've been wrong before. Either way, you have to admit that life in LSU land is always exciting LOL

I voted yes. It's obvious that Ed Orgeron is a HUGE upgrade from Brick Haley. You'd think that Kevin Steele would have to be a downgrade from John Chavis, but we don't know how much, or if it's even true. Chavis was a good defensive coach, but he was not without his faults. Steele's defenses haven't been great, but he's also never worked with the talent he'll have in Baton Rouge.

Recruiting is clearly better with this team, so the defensive talent should hold steady or improve. The big question will be how they handle the development of the players. To start, having Orgeron coaching the defensively line takes care of 1/3 of your defense. If we improve that unit and can get constant pressure from our front four, the rest of the defense would have to be REALLY bad to not be a net win.

Chief brought speed to the defense which was huge, I don't want that to go away just to get beefier guys that can't shed a block and get to the play.

You can't teach speed, but you can teach proper tackling fundamentals, etc.
