Re: A couple of thoughts... Look, the best evidence that LSU didn't "run up the score" is the fact that they threw the ball sparingly in the second half. Obviously, Flynn was doing well since he had a 59% completion ratio and no interceptions. Had LSU wanted to really run up the score, they could have just kept throwing the ball since they averaged 8.2 yards per catch. First Half = 15 pass attempts Second Half = 7 pass attempts (4 in the 3rd and 3 in the 4th) Secondly, LSU had 301 yards total offense at the half and finished the game with 468 total yards. I did the math, that's just 167 yards in the second half when LSU was "running up the score". Also, (and this goes back to my first point), LSU ran the ball 32 times in the second half if my counting was correct. From what I've always been taught, that's the method by which teams try to grind out the clock. Is it LSU's fault that Miami allowed LSU a team-average of 4.9 yards per rush? I'm sick of the "running up the score" talk. What you saw was a motivated Tiger football team beating a Miami team that either was over-matched or didn't take the Tigers seriously. If it's the latter, they paid the price with their pride. Personally, I was hoping LSU would hang about 60 on them. Miami would have done it had they been able to...everyone knows it. Now they know how it feels to be on the receiving end of a royal butt-whipping. It's been a long time coming. :geauxtige
Re: A couple of thoughts... Thanks for the in-depth comments Red. It hasn't been my contention for the minute all of this happened that the score was being ran up. Although, it's easy to see how people could see it that way. I've said a few times, and by no means does it excuse the behavior, that the Miami players may have felt the score was being ran up by the fakes when be all appearances they had already given up. I understand how frustrations can lead to actions many of us can't abide. Heck, after the 2000 season our FB got into a scrap in the game with an opposing player. He hasn't had any respect from me from that day hence...but, I do understand how it happened. Frustrating season, a coach who had lost control of the program and the players...
No. LSU just played that much better than Miami. I did not see anything (except maybe for that last attempt on 4th down) that would indicate LSU was trying to run up the score. Miles had put his backups in and Miami still could not do anything. Just because a team wins by a large margin does not mean they were trying to run up the score. Miles did all he could reasonably do to keep from running up the score except tell the offense not to score, and there is not a coach in the country that will tell his offense that.
I did not think we ran the score up. Hester was in there plenty after Addai had shredded the canes. So was Carey. We played the whole game with out backup QB (wasn't he GREAT!!! Go Matt!). I saw a lot of reserves in on defense in the 4th qtr. I didn't like the fake field goal with 4 minutes, that was across the line, IMO, but if the players called it, well it was the Peach Bowl. I remember Doug Moreau holding for Pat Screen to attempt an extra point in one of the 63-0 wins over Tulane in the mid 60's. Boys will be boys. But I don't think we ran the score up. AND I REALLY ENJOYED THE GAME! Just back from Lafayette and back to my computer.
Correct me if I'm wrong.... Object of the game on offense....to score points. Object of the game on defense....to stop the offense from scoring. If the shoe was on the other foot, and it was Miami 40 - LSU 3 ....the term "running up the score" would never had been used. I can see it now, "Another hurricane just hit Baton Rouge!
Sorry if this has been pointed out above. So if LSU "ran up" the score then when Miami beat Duke this year 52 - 7, Miami wasn't running up the score. Miami was up 31 - 0 at half time. Duke ended up the game with 128 yards of total offense to Miami's 557. What about Miami beating Wake Forest this year 47-17 or beating them 52- 7 last year. Miami also beat La. Tech 48 - 0 last year and Houston 38 - 13. That wasn't running up the score ? Its football, sometimes you just get beat up !
I have to say that our boys were just having a good time in a season when they needed to have fun. All that they have been through with their campus becoming a makeshift hospital, not knowing where there families were, and all of the close calls this season. They deserved a game like this were they could just enjoy being apart of a great team, and program such as LSU. Congrats tigers you deserve all the success you achieved this season!!!:helmet:
