The biological role of smoking, oral contraceptive use and endogenous sexual steroid hormones in invasive squamous epithelial cervical cancer.

For at least twenty years, epidemiological studies have found a correlation between cervical neoplasia and smoking and oral contraceptives. Over the last ten years, laboratory evidence has supported epidemiological findings. One example is the addition of progesterone to human papillomavirus-transfected cervical cells, which has led to oncogenic cell transformation. Very high concentrations of tobacco constituents in cervical mucus, as compared to serum, in smokers provided evidence of a biological role for smoking. It has previously been shown that the S-phase DNA fraction (as a measure of proliferation) was correlated to smoking and serum progesterone. There has been a gap between epidemiological and laboratory findings, as the clinical importance of these correlations have rarely, if ever, been reported. Our recent finding of a positive correlation between serum estradiol/progesterone ratio and length of survival in premenopausal women with invasive cervical cancer might add further knowledge, if confirmed by larger studies. Future studies on tumor markers could elucidate these observations.
  2. dude this is a study about steroids and women.I'm not going to comment on that because then I will have to explain too much on why and how these can cause cancer in women. Just remember anabolic and androgenic steroids are esseantally an altered version of the male hormone testosterone. I take back what I said earlier about steroids not causing cancer. I worded it wrong. 17-aa steroids(all orals steroids besides ones containing the acetate ester) can cause cancer due to the liver having to strip the methyl part of the steroid off during the first pass through the liver. But to cause cancer an extreme amount would have to be taken over an extreme amount of time. Every study that has showed oral steroids to cause liver cancer has proven this time and time again. Many of the studies were conducted during the 1950's and the doses and cycle length the patients were put on were insane. Also in certain individuals injectable steroids can cause prostate cancer due to enlarging the prostate but this is usually related to there abuse.

As far as Bo Jackson goes of course he used steroids. So what so where 90% of the people he was playing against so it was a level playing field. He was better then them then and would have been better if none of them would have juiced. Players have to juice to keep up, personally I feel whatever makes it more exciting then go for it. The officials know this is going on so why not educate the athletes on how to use them instead of them having to rely on what some guy at the gym told one of their buddies because you know 99% of them aren't smart enough to get on the internet and do research for themselves.

Also I hope you guys don't think that juice is just in pro sports because its not. Its very common in the college game too, all 3 big sports. and not just the big schools were NFL$$$ is on the line, its rampit even at the DII level.
  3. Well then, since Raphy seems to have been caught lying, I guess that means that every other person from now on who says that they didn't do what they're accused of actually did do it. Add to that those who admit it, and voila; everyone ever accused of anything for the rest of time is guilty. Glad Raphy cleared that one up for us.
  4. nope, but as long as i'm not sitting on a jury these dudes are guilty until proven innocent.
  5. enough with the science, i get too much of that at work.

if they let it go, you end up with way too many ex-athletes dead at 45 (exactly how many i dont know, but i think we'll soon find out). its the league's (and the player's union) responsibility to keep this in check. not enough of these guys have the ethics to keep from it under all the pressure.
  6. gumborue why would the athletes die at 45? If used right steroids will prolong life not cut it short. They are essetially a fountain of youth if used correctly. I will only ask you one question how many people have died as a result of anabolic and androgenic steroids? not insulin and other compounds just steroids.

p.s. The answer is ZERO. Not a single person ever. Some might claim that it caused this and that, BS look at the science behind it.
  7. I'm not sure if we can say they cause early death; However, I will say most Doctors agree they will rapidly increase the erosion of the cartilage in the joints.
People who get hooked on it, when prescribed by the Doctors, generally have problems after a few years on the stuff. Thats about all my buddy who is an orthopod says about the stuff in terms of physical problems. Obviously, he has noted the fact that it definately screws with the brain. When you are subjected to increased testoterone for extened periods of time and then come off the juice and the testo drops suddenly it causes depression and irritation.

But I dont believe BO was on the juice. The stories about him are that he was nasty in football and was a ball crusher in his early teens.
  8. I will be honest and say i dont know if Bo used steroids or not. He was one amazing athlete and i had the opportunity to see him play in the Cotton Bowl and he was truly amazing.

What i can tell you is steroids are rampant in college and pro sports now and MLB , NFL. College efforts to try and do away with steroids is a sham.

It is like the USA war on drugs. We know where the drugs are grown. We know who is growing it. And we claim to be in a war against it but we do nothing.

You would not be able to field a team in college or pro sports if everyone on steroids was kicked out.

When i was at NLU ( ULM ) back in the early 80's we had a player leave after spring and when he came back 3 months later he had grown huge in his biceps and everyone knew he had done steroids. He went from 3rd team to starter.

You dont have to be a genius to know why people take them. Money and the need for it has corrupted people since the beginning of time.

What do we do about it. You have to kick out any person who test positive without any second chances. If you are not willing to do that then steroids are here to stay.

Did Bo take steroids. I dont know is my answer. I hope not.

    Geaux LSU Tigers
  9. i hope he did. steroids are awesome when controlled. i hope more kids take them in moderation and get fat paychecks. steroids are good and not detrimental when you know what you're doing. if you abuse them, like anything else, you pay the price. if its not roids, its hgh and something else undetectable. people need to wake up.

    good post.
