Right now it is most important that "Our Gov't" work together, and govern themselves in a manner that is for the people. As pointed out, everyday that passes is just 1 step closer to the economic struggles getting worse. In many cases, across this country, families are an hr, a day, a week away from losing everything. Unfortunately, for them it is already too late, and stories of complete families losing their lives will continue to grow.
Re: Is the cocky attitude normal? The Dems would be wise not to get too cocky because they don't have absolute control of the Senate. The Dems only have 56 in the Senate (56%), while the GOP has 41 in the Senate (41%). To override a fililbuster in the Senate, a 60% supermajority is needed (three-fifths). As long as the 41 GOP Senators stick together, they can block any bill they so choose. This is how the GOP blocked Clinton's health care initiative in 1993, when Democrats controlled the White House and both chambers of Congress. This is also how the Dems blocked Bush's plan to privatize Social Security and many of Bush's judicial appointments when the GOP controlled the White House and both chambers of Congress.
Re: Is the cocky attitude normal? That's why Obama wants GOP support. If the bill doesn't succeed, then he and the Dems take a huge hit as well.
Re: Is the cocky attitude normal? The key here is every Republican senator sticking together, which is something I'm not going to hold my breath for. You have to have some sort of courage to filibuster, which sometimes seems to escape Senate Republicans.
Re: Is the cocky attitude normal? The "contract with America" never really sold, you know and it ended up marginalizing Newt Gingrich. Actually, Clinton worked with the republican Congress quite notably on reforming welfare, conducting the Bosnia and Kosovo wars, and the Iraq sanctions and no-fly zones. He's trying to impede the partisan politics that have gotten to the point where each party automatically opposes any other party policy, even if it is good for the country. It has gotten that crazy. The parties should be cooperating on 75% of what needs doing and arguing over the remaining 25% instead of arguing over everything and never giving an inch. This is the cycle that Obama wants to break.
