About the recruiting, it is all in the people you have working for you. Head coaches finish the deal, they rarely work the deal from A-Z. I suspect they might do A and Z, but not much in between. What am I missing here?
Del Rio is no doubt a defensive guy. The polar opposite of Bobby Petrino, who is big on prolific scoring and passing offense but could care less about defense (I swear, every Louisville game I've ever seen, whether the Cardinals win or lose, it's alway 53-50 or something like that). I would be willing to hire Petrino, and make him one of the five highest paid coaches in college football, under two conditions: 1) He must agree to retain the entire defensive coaching staff 2) He must agree to allot at least 45% of available scholarships for recruiting defensive players every year. If we hire a defensive coach, on the other hand, we don't seem to have those issues as much. Even the most fanatical defensive guru will admit that if you don't score, you can't win, so they'll make the effort to hire good off. coordinators and have a good scoring offense. I'm just not so sure we can successfully woo a head coach from the NFL that is currently succeeding at that level. If Del Rio were struggling in Jax, that's one thing. But the Jaguars are on the way up. I'll believe it when I see it. But Del Rio would be a major coup, no doubt, and if he comes here and wins a lot, it would cement LSU as a superpower in today's college football world.
Originally created Wednesday, December 29, 2004 Del Rio deflects questions regarding his interest in LSU vacancy By BART HUBBUCH, The Times-Union Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio continues to sidestep questions about his interest in the coaching vacancy at LSU, despite numerous media reports in Louisiana that he is one of four candidates on the school's short list. Del Rio did not give a firm response when asked twice in the past two weeks if he would listen to LSU, which is looking for a replacement after Nick Saban bolted for the Miami Dolphins over the weekend. "I don't care to get into speculative questions along that line," Del Rio said last week. "I'm very happy here in Jacksonville." Asked again on Monday, Del Rio would neither confirm nor deny any interest in the job. The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune reported Monday that Del Rio is among a group of four top candidates that includes Louisville's Bobby Petrino, Oklahoma State's Les Miles and Cleveland Browns interim coach Terry Robiskie. Petrino, who interviewed for the job last weekend and appears to be the leading candidate, is a former Jaguars assistant. Del Rio, a linebacker for the New Orleans Saints in the mid-1980s, has several connections to Louisiana and LSU. He met his wife in New Orleans, and his daughter graduated from the school. Del Rio is 8-7 this year. Del Rio a Candidate at LSU? Jaguars Coach Jack Del Rio By Dan Hicken First Coast News JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Is he or isn't he? That is the question. The answer for now is, maybe. Here's what we do know: Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio's agent has made contact with LSU officials about the coaching job in Baton Rouge. Del Rio, through Jaguars spokesman Dan Edwards, says as far as he knows his agent is not shopping him. Del Rio is in his second season with the Jaguars. A job at LSU could conceivably pay more than Del Rio makes in his current job with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Beware Petrino!!! I'm a Louisville fan and live in Louisville. Your message sounds like EVERY message posting in Louisville right now...you guys should beware of Bobby Petrino!
This is very good news, at first I was unsure about Del Rio, but I have warmed up a little to the idea. I don't think Robiskie will work out and have a feeling Miles' stock dropped tonight. Petrino is probably still the front runner, but if Del Rio is interested I would say it is his job to lose.
were quite a few reports saying petrino practically fell out of the running from tuesday to wednesday. something not so good during an interview. no details but was reported locally more than once. no idea if true.
Perhaps, it was nothing Petrino did and related to movement involving another coach, perhaps, Del Rio speculation
Heard those as well. The only problem is I have also heard LSU offered Tubs, Nutt, Miles, and even Petrino. Also heard reports of LSU being so interested they met with Petrino twice already. I know you were not saying it was true. Unlike others I am happy with our coaching search thus far, with the exception of even asking the Arkansas AD about Nutt.
