Sorry, Sooner fans,if you read any implications into my post . Again, somebody asked the question, "What is a Sooner?". I answered it. My point in saying the things I said was that, for some reason, Oklahomans have chosen to be proud of something illegal and glorified it. Yes I alluded to a certain period of your football team beset by a certain group of unsavory characters and events, but come on people, have a sense of humor will ya? You guys don't hesitate to point out our losing seasons under some unsuccessful coaches or throw your 7 nc's in our faces. You think we're not gonna respond? So if I have offended the Great Sooner nation, I apologize. It's only a ball game and no matter who wins, fans of both programs should be thankful that we got to be a part of it. Whether we win on the scoreboard or not, LSU fans will consider their team and themselves champions. I just wonder if OU fans can do the same. Good luck, happy new year and God bless. GEAUX TIGERS!!! LSU, 2003 TEAM OF DESTINY!!! 2003 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP, GOT ONE?

College sports fans are hard-pressed to find a nickname that is as unique and as linked to a state's history as a Sooner. The University of Oklahoma is the only school known as Sooners. The Oklahoma Territory opened with the Land Run of 1889. Settlers from across the globe, seeking free land, made their way to the prairies of the plains to stake their claim to a new life. One of the few rules to claiming a lot of land was that all participants were to start at the same time, on the boom of a cannon. All settlers who started then were labeled as "Boomers" and the ones who went too soon were called "Sooners." Also, increasingly, "Sooner" came to be a synonym of Progressivism. The Sooner was an "energetic individual who travels ahead of the human procession." He was prosperous, ambitious, competent, a "can-do" individual. And Oklahoma was the Sooner State, the land of opportunity, enterprise and economic expansion, very much in the Progressive spirit that engulfed the old South in the 1920's. OU athletic teams were called either Rough Riders or Boomers for 10 years before the current Sooner nickname emerged in 1908. The university actually derived their name from a pep club called 'The Sooner Rooters.' The success of University of Oklahoma athletic teams over the years have made the nickname synonymous with winning.
Actually, it was "Spooner", not "Sooner" and it stems from the gay nightclubs in the 1970's disco era. Reportedly, one gay man would yell "Sooner" and run into the bathroom and another would yell "Spooner". A game of "switch" was then played in the bathroom. Source: Oklahoma City Gazette
