Houston and Dallas are both scorching hot in the summer but at least Houston has the constant breeze from the gulf. Dallas can get really bitter cold in the winter
Yes lived in Houston from 1986 to August 2020. Left Lafayette because of the oil and gas bust in 1985. That bust was worse than what we are experiencing now. Now live on bayou La Rose in Butte la Rose and buddy aint ever leaving dis place as us Cajuns say. When you grow up in South Louisiana you think this is normal till you leave like I did in 1964 to serve in the USAF. You quickly realize the outside world is different. You also realize the things that are really special and unique about South Louisiana you took for granted as a kid cause you didn't have anything to compare it to. Notice I don't say Louisiana I say South Louisiana because there is a world of difference. South Louisiana is like a country within a state. North Louisiana just as soon be East Texas. Nothing wrong with that just saying. All the cliches about South Louisiana are true. The people, the culture, the food, the music, the language, the landscapes and the attitudes are hardly found anywhere else on the planet. I was literally born on the bayou, bayou Teche to be exact, and will die on bayou La Rose. I am already halfway to heaven living here so heaven aint very far away if The Man lets me in. Laissez les bons temps rouler
I was born on the bayou. Actually the Mississippi River and in a hospital but it was so close to the river that a guy with a strong arm could have thrown a rock into the river. We should trade Shreveport to Texas for the Southeast area near the border. My grandparents lived in a small town in the middle of Orange-Beaumont-Port Arthur. They spoke French as much as English and so did most of their friends
Man I have always thought that Orange and Port Arthur, Texas should be in Louisiana and Shreveport and Lake Charles should be in Texas. Monroe and Ruston belongs in Mississippi cause it's more like the old South. New Orleans well I have no idea where it belongs maybe in Brooklyn.
I know 2 guys who are friends. One is from the 9th ward and the other from Brooklyn. They bot have the same accent. The New Orleans guy is Italian and the Brooklyn guy is Irish. It's really fun to hear them call each other names.
When I reported to my company commander at Clinton Sherman AFB in Oklahoma in 1964 I still had my NOLA accent. He was convinced I was from NYC. He had to look over my records to assure himself I was from Louisiana.
There was a time you could distinguish 4-5 different accents in New Orleans. They ranged from the Irish Channel to the Parish (St Bernard) & West Bank to Uptown and “Metry”. There were even a couple of black accents. Unfortunately they’re being erased by television and people moving away to other places.
