I'm not advocating leaving the debt ceiling where it is. The point is that it's high time that they consider the ramifications of this unchecked spending and where it will lead. The debt ceiling gets raised after spending cuts are built in. It's called tough love, something the Dems don't want to deal with. You have adopted Obama's scare tactics. Nice.
What creditor in the world looks at us and says "Oh man they need to raise that artificial number in order for us to think they are good payers". That is absolute non-sense. And to think b/c it wasn't raised we wouldn't pay our bills. More trash. The FED would just print more money like they have been doing. The govt. should not spend more than it takes in. THE END. And yes it is raising taxes but going back to old tax times. You can't reference one time and say well that was the set rate forever. What the tax is today is what it is. If you change it up or down then that is the new rate.
Its called obstructionism. Republicans always think they can do this and that there will be no payback.
It's not an artificial number. A debt ceiling means we can't borrow any more. It means that bill will go unpaid including treasury notes. This is why the markets and the worlds economies are nervous. Your naivete is showing. "Printing more money" is a euphemism for "borrowing money". I agree, but first we must pay down this debt and that will take both spending cuts and tax increases. We cannot pay down the debt unless we start posting some surpluses like we did in the 1990's when taxes were higher. No the Bush tax cuts were always supposed to be temporary, but the GOP conveniently forgets that part. Also the part where the tax cuts were supposed to stimulate the economy. Instead Bush left office with the economy in shambles. Tax cuts for the wealthy was a failed experiment that needs to end. They did not create jobs, they just put in on their piles.
How are the Dems not being obstructive here? Do you contend that the party in the White House is automatically correct? Negotiations work both ways. A perfect negotiation result will leave both sides unhappy. GOP has shown a willingness to concede on the revenue issue. They don't agree on how it should be done but that's not being obstinate. Obama is "my way or the highway" and he's preying on peoples' fears to force the GOP's hand. He is NOT trying to find a resolution that both sides can live with.
I would not have a problem with a return to the 90's tax rates, but this President and Congress must first demonstrate that they can be responsible with the money they have before they get a dollar more. Cut spending first, then let's talk about more taxes.
They have offered $Trillions in spending cuts that Republicans want. It's called a concession. It's what honest negotiators offer to reach compromises. Since when? They have absolutely refused to raise taxes, even to end the temporary tax cuts. How is he not? They were near deals twice and offered huge spending cuts but the Republicans walked out both times.
BECAUSE HE WON'T BUDGE ON THE TAX INCREASE ISSUE. Is that clear enough? As MC Tiger alluded to, Obama cannot be trusted with more revenue. He'll just spend it. The GOP has agreed to remove tax loopholes and some revision to tax rates. Read their lips...
