When he arrived at LSU this past weekend, Red River defensive end Bennie Logan had a scholarship offer from the Tigers in hand.

Just not the one he wanted.

That changed Saturday when the 6-foot-2, 250-pounder met with LSU coach Les Miles, who extended Logan an invitation to join the 2009 recruiting class — no strings attached.

“This is what I wanted all along,” Logan said Monday, two days after becoming LSU’s latest commitment.

For weeks, Logan carried a “grayshirt” offer from LSU. That meant signing Feb. 4, but waiting until 2010 to become part of the team.

    No more.

Logan is the 21st LSU commitment toward the 2009 class, the 10th from Louisiana. Not including grayshirt commitment Josh Johns of Central, Logan is the first player to join the fray since Houston safety Craig Loston, who made his choice Jan. 2.

“I think they were waiting to see what happened with Charles Alexander,” Logan said of the LSU defensive lineman who has petitioned the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility.

Alexander, who just completed his senior season, may in fact get that sixth year. But it won’t have an impact on Logan, who said he committed to Miles on the spot.

Logan had a full, standard offers from several Division I schools, including Nebraska, Michigan and Texas Tech. He will probably cancel a visit to Lubbock this weekend, he said.

“I’m happy about it,” Logan said of his choice. “I’m just ready to get started.”

Logan earned all-state recognition as a senior at Red River, a Class 2A school in Coushatta. He also is a member of The Advocate’s Second Dozen, published in Sunday’s editions.

    Re: DE Bennie Logan COMMITS!

Mike S reported Logan has gone from 235 lbs since Summer camp to 275 now and hardly any body fat.

    Yikes!

    Sam who?

Mike S went on to say not only will he be able to compete at the level of the SEC, but WILL be a FORCE.

Sam and Ed who, not being biased, I never understood why we went after stinson when we had Logan waiting for a offer.

Holy crap, if he's really 275..

Bennie Logan is this year's LaVar Edwards, I guess. Unheralded, but supremely talented.

I don't remember Mike S talking about any "under the radar" recruit like that...ever.

Say what? How? That can't be right. Six months and hes put on 40lbs of muscle? What has he been doing, taking steroids lol? Maybe he went through a growth spurt and hit the weights hard I guess...but damn.

    I think hes exaggerating drastically.

Either he was more than 235 to begin with, isn't 275, grew a few inches, or is now fat. I know he isn't fat or LSU wouldn't have offered. I highly doubt he is now 275 unless he was actually 255 before. From the pictures I saw while he was at the LSU camp he looked 235. I call BS, you just don't put on that much muscle in that short a period of time. You can't even put on 40 lbs of muscle in one summer using steroids.

He's probably closer to 255 than 275 but either way it's better than 235 and it's great to hear such praise for a 3 star. Makes me really hopeful for the depth of this class.
