Koenning would be a very good choice for a DC.

The problems is that in the losses, his defense gave up the big plays. Against Florida State, if I remember correctly, the score was close until late and his defense gave up several long passes and runs. Part of being a good defense is not just stats. It is making the plays when you need to and his defense failed to do that against several key opponents this year.

That's because his defense is devoid of talent and what talent he has, it was injured for the season and it did better than what we did this season.

    Sold.

They probably have the best secondary in the ACC and incredible talent on the defensive line. He is a better coordinator than what the stats indicate, but they have tons of talent -- they just lost all motivation after getting beat down in the opener and after their coach was fired.

It it dropped from one of the best defenses to a horrid defense in less than a season under the same guy?

    Apparently not...

Koenning came to Alabama with Dennis Franchione. His first season was a disaster but the second was much better and our sanctions hadn't set in yet. Koenning went to Texas A&M with Fran and the defense was horrible in a conference where almost all the defenses are horrible. A&M's defense was so horrible Fran finally had to fire Koenning to keep his neck out of the noose a few more years. I really think there are better DCs out there than Vic.

I thought that was Torbush - and his brother, Les Koenning, was the OC. Perhaps my memory is fried.

Vic Koenning started his coaching career as a grad assistant and eventually the secondary coach. From there he took the Wyoming DC job, where it eventually turned into the Wyoming HC job. He was fired from Wyoming with a 5-29 record and became the DC at Troy. He later left Troy to be the DC at Clemson.

You may be thinking of another Koenning...

Texas A&M had an offensive coordinator named Les Koenning. He's now at South Alabama.

    Re: DC Watch: Vic Koenning

Per an article in the Advocate today, Koenning was considered by Miles as recently as last season. I'm not sure of this would move him up the list because Miles has somewhat of a relationship with him there or eliminates him because if Miles did talk to him last year and still went with Peveto/Mallory then something about Koenning must have given him a bad vibe.

    Just a thought...

Koenning would be a great hire. Not only were his defenses ranked in the top 20 in 4 out of the 5 defensive catagories each of the 4 years he was at Clemson the same is true for the 2 years he was at Troy. Solid consistancy.
