im not sure about a grudge but id guess les doesnt feel comfortable with Coach O's ethics and/or recruiting methods. that was the reason for the tiff in the first place.

and if thats true, coach o was never given a serious look and you cant blame les for not selling out.

not sure why chavis wasnt his choice but ill take the younger guy with more passion and a better recruiter. i think its a better fit.

even though neither blitz too often and play this pussy soft zone crap.

Yeah, apparently Dabo and he never got along, but I thought the escalade comments were pretty funny.
I'm optimistic about this guy. Most Clemson fans were upset when he resigned...
What impresses me is wherever he's been he has done well with the talent and adapted his scheme to fit the players.

Mabe Im wrong about this possible hire but It seems that bend but dont break defense always fails in the SEC. I know for a fact it doesnt work for LSU.... Lou Tepper and dont forget That damn Ark. game. Twice.

Is that the same as the "play to not lose" defense?

"Bend but don't break" did work for LSU quite well in the past, when Archer was running it for Arnsparger. Additionally, since the Spread takes advantage of over-pursuit, it might be a key component of the eventual correction defenses will make to counter the Spread. Maybe Koening will be the guy to figure out. If he is, I hope that he does it for us.

Both Arkansas games were lost due to poor execution of the end-of-game prevent defense. Not the same thing.

Lou Tepper's defense was best described not as "bend but don't break", but rather as "turn around and look".

I like the hire if in fact this is our guy. He is a very good recruiter and I guess if we couldn't find an agressive type DC I would rather have someone that is proven. I hope he is very strict and believes in playing the best players on the field.

How exactly is Orgeron a better fit? We already have guys who are bad defensive coordinators. Is another guy who is a defensive coordinator, but better at recruiting going to improve the defense back to top ten status? I don't follow that logic.

I haven't watched a ton of Clemson games, but the games I did watch I saw the defense get after the QB and I saw QB's struggle to make any headway against the Clemson defense. After the way teams passed all over us this year, that sounds EXACTLY like the kind of defensive coordinator we need.

Keep in mind that most teams who take a "bend, don't break" mentality do so for a lack of talent. It's a defensive style that focuses on limiting big plays because you don't have playmakers. Koenning hasn't hesitated to put his CB's man-to-man on receivers at Clemson from what I have seen. I think it's probably because he's had some good CB's. Philip Merling and Gaines Adams have been premier pass rushers, keeping pressure on QB's and forcing them to make quick decisions. I saw a lot of 4-2-6 defense the few Clemson games I was lucky enough to watch and it reminded me of what Saban used to do, but without the exotic blitzes. To be honest with you, I wouldn't dismiss such a scheme so quickly. LSU is thin on talent at LBer and thick on talent at Safety these days.

Exactly, the "bend, don't break" quote is from when he was at Wyoming, not exactly a talent mecca. The blitzing 5 was also from Wyoming and shows me that he adjusts his defense to disguise weaknesses. It worked, as they were #2 in the country in sacks. Can he adapt to the SEC? I guess we'll see...

Is there ANYONE available that doesn't have a bend and don't break scheme? Is Miles going for a guy who has a similar scheme to Pelini or something?
