How could it be a 'done deal' if Miami and Saban have not even engaged in serious contract negotiations? It is not even clear Nick will take the job...Miami has to comply with the minority rule, but they can't even interview current NFL black assistants. This means they will have to either interview a black college coach or an unemployed candidate. And they'll have to do this very very soon. Nick will not allow this situation to bleed over into the dead period, that would negatively impact the recruiting class this year and the ability of the university to hire a new coach in time to save it. He will not do this. I fully expect that if Miami doesn't offer the job to Nick formally by next Wednesday, he will pull himself out. In effect this means Miami will have to (by my judgement...no inside info, don't ask) find, set up, interview, and decide on a minority candidate within 4 days. I find it highly unlikely they can/will do this, and at the same time seem remotely credible that they gave him a fair shot to get the job over Saban. That is our greatest hope right there.....we should pray Miami screws this up to the point where Nick has no choice but to remove himself from consideration. Now...if, and I mean if, the university gurus have already decided on a replacement for Nick (before he even gets past preliminary talks, no matter how well they went).....and that candidate is Mike Riley - then god help us because we are in a world of hurt. This would mean they did not do an exhaustive search, competent interviews, or even consider the two dozen or so viable candidates that are out there. If they rushed to judgement that quickly on something that is not even needed at the time, then we have some total idiots making these decisions.
My fiance' tells me that a deal between LSU and myself is all but done to replace Nick should he leave!!!! (and she's a VERY reliable source who's rarely wrong......just like all fiance's, wives and girlfriends) :thumb: So far, Mike Riley is a "done deal" ....Butch Davis is a "done deal" ....Tubberville is a "done deal" ....Saban leaving is a "done deal" ....Saban staying is a "done deal" Hell! Before we know it we'll have 4 head coaches on our sideline next season!
I don't think this is true, either. For one thing, this would mean that Sean O'Keefe had minimal, at best, input in the search. The only way something like this is true is (a) if Skip and TAF and other members of the Tiger community began a "little black book" of sorts of people who'd be approachable regarding the LSU job, ready for use when Nick started looking once again, (b) Riley was high on this list and (c) expressed strong interest when contacted (sometime this week, I'd guess). Again, we'll see soon enough.
Next time don't ask such a stupid assed question and you won't feel the need to retort in such a manner. You are one of the fans who will put up with this year in and year out. Congrats, you have inifinite patience. I myself would like to see LSU have a great coach and stability, not just the former.
Soon enough? You know something I don't????? HUH?? HUH??? Spill it!!! SPILL IT!!!!!
Riley is very popular at OSU but OSU will never be a consistent FB power due to recruiting difficulties as a result of no major instate High school base (don't tell my OSU grad wife I said that). I guess everybody remembers different things about the Riley/bama but my memory of it is: --bama's first choice was Leavitt of South Florida but he turned it down after getting a raise to stay put --Riley (a former bama DB) was talking to both bama and UCLA about the HC job. bama offered Riley the job on a Friday and he asked for the weekend to think about it. At that point bama backed out and hired Shula. Riley ended up at OSU after UCLA hired someone else.
The only aspect of this whole thing that I believe is that Mike Riley, Butch Davis and any other "potential" replacements that has been rumored to be a "done deal" is that the ONLY thing "done" is that each of these coaches agreed to interview if Saban left. I imagine that this is a direct result of Skip not sitting on his hands, and not wanting LSU to be left with it's pants down with the "hot stove days" of recruiting coming up.
The Mike Riley information cames from 3 separate sources, one of which is "somebody way way up on the totem pole".
Not that I don't think he will be a good HC, but it is foolish if they've already made up their minds. I know it is important to have candidates on a short list - but at least interview the short list. If they have done that, it was a national secret...and if they haven't, they're fools.
