If y'all want to get a bunch of blue crabs, run out to Horn Island at the end of this month. They come to the shore to mate. It's an unbelievable site.
I'm surprised the season isn't closed if they're congregating to mate. I know, for example, frogging is only closed in April and May due to that. You can go in a crawfish lake and pick up a pile in a small area. Least that's what I'm told.
Dude, I've spent a ton of my teenage years on that little piece of marsh. A good friend of mines dad owns the store in the marina (at least he did, not sure if it is still theirs) Its not talked about a lot because it is kind of a dump. The beach sucks, the freaking maringouin will carry you out to marsh island if you don't have an anchor tied to your ass. Not a bad place to hang out and have a few beers, catch some fish and stuff but get back across the bridge before it gets dark. Crazy people down there bro.
There is no such thing as a crab season. You just scoop up as many as you want. Gotta have a boat though
Are there crabs there? When we were leaving there were some guys picking up trash. Didn't dawn on me that they were in orange for a reason. Seriously, it's way the phuck on the edge of the earth. Last thing I was thinking. Anyway, we had some extra watermelon cut up in gallon ziplock bags. The kids didn't want them so I got out the truck to go offer one of the guys closest. Big black dude. He smiles, takes it then says, "You got my $5.00?" I said no, I don't. He then asked if I had a couple of dollars I could give him. Then I realized he was part of a chain gang- just no chains. I told him no and walked back to my truck. Felt comfortable knowing I had two Glocks and 3 loaded magazines. Anyway, where you think they were from? Parish? Well, technically there is. It's a year-round season. Obviously not good in the winter but still, I was just saying that I'm surprised they let people harvest anything when they're grouped to mate. Not very nice of you to nab crabs that are going to get on the nest.
My guess would be st. Mary or vermillion. Not sure which one Is closer. You can get some crabs there but its really fished out. My dad always took us to pecan island or marsh island to get crabs. If you are talented enough to throw a cast net you can limit out on shrimp at marsh island as well. Put in at the point and run to sw pass (bout 45 min dep on how many horses and the chop) you'll see it.
In general, 50 pounds. Here is the full regulation: http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/fishing/recreational-shrimping
It's worth mentioning that when the crabs come to shore and you are scooping them with nets....you aren't supposed to harvest the females that are loaded down with eggs. Some people harvest a few anyways because they like to eat the eggs. They are orange and have the texture of a cooked carrot when they are boiled. Not bad!
