The latest report says sustained winds at 165 with higher gusts. It will weaken some as it moves inland. I obviously won't be visiting my brother in NO in four weeks. My thoughts and prayers are with you guys & gals.

my guess is it will be about 135 when it hits land...

it CANT stay too strong... the depth of the water just doesn't allow it to do so...

that is why ALL of these storms weaken

I was in Homestead, FL within 24 hours after Andrew hit, working on coordinating the telecom infrastucture/disaster-recovery effort for FEMA. They brought the team via helicopter and I cannot begin to describe the awe I felt in seeing the level of destruction in South Florida. But, most of Andrew was wind-related, while Katrina seems poised do do both wind and storm surge.

Having grown up in Panama City, we were no strangers to hurricanes. Rode through the eye of Hurricane Allen on a boat in Brownsville/Aransas Pass, TX and saw that too ...... but I must say, I've never seen anything to rival this monster. (Let's just say I won't be pissed if it turns out the weathermen have been taking a little dramatic license.)

Y'all be careful down there and play it safe. This bastig is not to be toyed with .... best to you all.

That's usually true when the coastal and shallow waters are cooler with the Gulf stream; HOWEVER, the water off the coast now is 90 degrees F; that means more fuel for the fire, unfortunately, instead of the usual scenario.

Wow, I can't believe I went to Grand Isle on Friday for charter fishing on Saturday, and now this is going to happen. They expect 20-25 feet storm surge, and all those houses are only 10-12 feet off the ground. We had our trip rescheduled for October 8th, but I fear the Bridge Side Marina won't even be there then. I fear Grand Isle will be destroyed.

The biggest problem for New Orleans is going to be the storm surge. The water has been piling up for miles now. Doesn't matter at this point if its 165 or 145 when it hits. If it goes just to the east of New Orleans you will basically see Lake Ponch. in the CBD !
