Well I know a guy here in Dallas that brings them in from somewhere in south LA. He's got pretty low overhead so his prices are about 2-3 dollars a pound cheaper than the resturants. Plus he's letting me ride on his St Patty's float so that's pretty cool.
Are you going to be in the parade on Saturday? Which float? And on the topic, where is this market you speak of? Finding good seafood in Dallas is like finding a needle in a haystack. Oh, and Cajunlostincali, you are just plain EVIL for that picture of frog legs! I'm not going to be back in Louisiana until June...
Yes, I'm riding in the Greenville parade Saturday. I'll be on the Cajun Crawfish Co. float. The owner's name is David and he started off doing catering and boils in the DFW area and now has a store front. I think it's in Lewisville. He still does catered events and weekend boils in random spots around Dallas. Last weekend he was at the Central Market on Coit and George Bush. Here is the web site http://www.cajuncrawfishco.com/ He's the one that was selling for $6 boiled that I mentioned in my first post and he does a really good job. I've also had them at Dodie's on Greenville. Dodie's was selling them for about $7.60 a pound ($19 for a 2.5 pound tray) Dodies is pretty good but not as good as David's IMO. I know you can also get crawfish and other cajun food at Nathan's on Midway and Beltline but I've never had their crawfish so I can't speak for its quality. The Dallas LSU Alumni chapter is having a boil on April 19th at White Rock Lake. That's always a good time too. http://www.lsualumnidallas.com/crawfish.php
The St. Patricks Day Parade runs through my neighborhood on Saturday and there are parties all over for the rest of the day. My usual spot is at a neighbor's who throws a big crawfish boil and it's usually the first crawfish I eat each spring. But I'll be out of town and miss it, damn it.
I paid $0.89 live last weekend. Haven't bought any already boiled in a while, so not sure what that's running right now.
I have a number to a guy that flies them to me in OKC. Pretty resonable price but I haven't callled yet this year. They will go down after good friday. If any of you want it let me know. He will send them anywhere, all crated up plus the seasoning. Not a bad deal at all.
How does one go about flying them out? Do you (or him) have connections with someone with a private plane?
He ships them on a plane, I think he uses southwest but gets the freight fare so it's a lot cheaper. I had two sacks flown into to OKC last year, picked them up at the airport. I don't remember exactly what the price was but I do know there is NO WAY I could have got them there any other way that was close to comparable in price. I think it was like 120 or something like that. They were really nice crawfish and the seasoning that he sent was amazing.
