Are we 0-2 or something? Have I missed something the whole off season and first 2 games? No we aren't playing our best ball, but really we have won both games. Not to mention many of us believed this to be a 9-3 season. This team with some improvement and an expansion of the playbook is going to live up to or exceed that expectation.
So why is it retarded? LSU seems to be falling below expectations in several areas in the 1st two games and basically no one has come up with a real reason why except we HOPE Les is holding back the aces until UGA and beyond. Most of the so called guesses I've seen are based on this or some particular aspect of the team such as OL blocking. The article I proposed gives a common thread to ALL of the problems I've seen so far. That is retarded? As an example the OL blocking problems just MIGHT be that EVERY time we get into a power I formation with Chuck at TB we ALWAYS give him the ball and he ALWAYS runs up the gut. Don't you think if fans notice this that just MAYBE the other team's DC did too? Against Washington I noticed that when we did this they loaded the box with 7 or 8 guys. It was more than obvious that TT & JoJo could have owned the Washington DB's and we just had JJ turn around and hand it to Chuck. I didn't find it a big surprise that he was getting hit before he got back to the line. I don't think it was his fault or the OL. It was like the Washington defense was in the huddle. That sort of scheme isn't vanilla, it's pathetic. I can't wait to see how USC attacks that defense this week. From what I know about their WR's they are good but in my opinion not quite as good as us but Washington's DB's are their weak spot. I bet USC goes right at them until Washington pulls guys from the box. Then they run it down their throat, not before. Just my opinion.
but maybe, just maybe, the people who thought that this team would be MUCH better than 9-3 are the ones upset with the way we've played the first two games? i was pissed off that we didn't show more offense in the first game, but i was over it by the following monday. i was happy that we won against a pretty damn good washington team that may give USC all kinds of fits. this past game against vandy? i was honestly pleased with it, really. i thought that was the kind of performance we were going to see right-off-the-bat. sometimes people just get displeased when they know that a team is capable of much more. but that's why they have to play the games. for me, personally, i knew the washington game was going to be the barometer. had they come out and blown washington off of the field, i'd have NO reservations saying that this is a two-loss at worst LSU team. however, the washington and vandy games brought me down to earth, and now i know that this is going to (likely) be a three or four-loss team. as a fan, i can live with that -- as long as they don't roll-over and die like last season.
It's a team finding itself. The good news is there has been signs of progress from game 1 to game 2. There will be continued progress in game 3, and by game 4 we will finally get to see what Miles and co. have been hiding up their sleeves. Don't be surprised with a W over UGA, and a good fight at least against UF.
If Florida and UGA want to show off 90% of their offensive playcalling in the first three games to give us a lot to look at in the film room, then I sure won't object to it. Sometimes you do it out of necessity (UGA) to win, sometimes you do it to show off to BCS voters (UF). If I'm Les with the kind of athletic offensive talent we have I know I don't want to tip my hand to UGA and UF if I can win with a vanilla playbook. We have to bring along a young inexperienced QB, an inexperienced O-line, and a new defense. Miles learned from the Lee fiasco last year about forcing your young QB into uncomfortable situations, and is slowly developing them while the schedule is favorable. It really ain't rocket science.
So either the Tigers capabilities are too low or . . . your expectations are too high. I bet they did. I expect they'll put 8 in the box whenever Scott lines up. And then they will be vulnerable to some very excellent receivers that we have. Then why didn't we lose? Perhaps it was an adequate offense and Les hasn't shown his entire hand yet. Can you think of a reason that a coach might want to do that?
We didn't lose because we have 4 & 5* athletes and they have 2 & 3 *'s. As far as why show your hand, why not? That gives them even MORE stuff to look at and try to game plan for. Right now I bet neither Meyer or Mrs. Saban's little boy Nick are exactly shaking worrying about what Les MIGHT spring on them with the Wild Whatever & Shep. Florida seems to go through their playbook as they please. So you see it on film? Who cares. Try stopping it. Meyer always has a couple of plays up his sleeve like the jump pass that took advantage of everyone but the equipment manager coming up hard to stop Tebow in short yardage. The answer? Just throw a little hand grenade pass over them to a wide open guy who slipped out of the pack. However it's just a few game specific plays. He didn't try to hide his whole offensive scheme. The other thing I see is that Les is trying to bring along JJ SLOWLY and build his confidence. Well if you were JJ and you knew you had 2 or 3 NFL caliber receivers and Washington had DB's that were "not so good". Wouldn't you want to air it out to them? Now if you are told "no JJ just turn around and hand it to Chuck & get out of the way" would that build YOUR confidence? It sure wouldn't mine.
