CB Sammy Joseph, Soph. - He was the team's biggest corner before choosing to transfer. The 6-1 Joseph was an excellent tackler finishing fourth on the team with 55 stops last year. He doesn't have the speed of the rest of the top CU corners, but he's a decent coverman picking off two passes and breaking up five others.

Cornerback Sammy Joseph has become the second starter to say he wants to leave Colorado.

"Sammy Joseph is going somewhere else because of the atmosphere on campus and the way he was treated as a black player," coach Gary Barnett told KVCU-AM, the campus radio station, on Monday. Barnett could not immediately be reached for further comment.

Reached by telephone in his hometown of New Orleans, Joseph refused to comment on any aspect of his situation.

"Soon I will, though," he said.

A commission that investigated the football program's recent recruiting scandal concluded more needs to be done to encourage interest in the school by blacks and other minorities.

The report said 40 percent of the football team is black, but there were only 85 black freshmen on campus and 448 black undergraduates out of more than 24,000 overall.

Joseph, a redshirt freshman who started every game last fall, was fourth on the team in tackles with 55 and had two interceptions.

His brother, Vance Joseph, was the cornerbacks coach at Colorado until he was placed on administrative leave during the recent investigation into the football program. He later took an assistant's job at Bowling Green.

My bad on that, i totally forgot about the transfer. Regardless, he only further backs up my point that we should be more than okay at CB depth. I heard good things about him, he could definitely be a wild card and push for starting time. I am also forgetting Joe Lawrence, who I thought was a WR, but is listed as a DB. Is he getting a RS, or is he ST's only?

What makes anyone think the X-Man would make a good cornerback. Sure, he's got world class track speed, but you have to have "hips" to play corner & I've seen nothing of the X-Man so far that would make me think of him as a cornerback. Let the young man stretch the field on offense & he'll be a darn good WR before he leaves LSU.

Yes. He appealed his status to the NCAA who ruled that it was a standard Div I-A to Div I-A transfer, and that he would have to sit out a season. He appealed on the basis of the unusual situation at Colorado, but it was disallowed by the NCAA. I don't think he loses a year, and still has three remaining.

I agree with Hot Dog. The top three CB's next year should be Prude, Stevenson, and Chevis Jackson. Joseph would be Dime and/or back up (or starter) at safety. At any rate we have lots of talent coming back. It will still be difficult to replace Webster & Travis Daniels, though.

What?! Joseph has proven more at the college level than any our CB's. He has been with the team just as long as Stevenson and Jackson and is much more talented than Prude. Moving him to safety would be beyond stupid (especially considering who we already have there).

Don't read anything into Sammy Joseph being considered for safety. Jesse Daniels has the SS spot locked up right now, although I suspect that Craig Steltz will be woring hard to get his own grip on that position. There isn't anything that's going to get Landry off the field, either.

Stevenson, Prude, Jackson, Gordon, Child...and you still have Zenon, Joe Lawrence, and some other Freshmen likely to RS this year, all competing for PT. And that is just to play corner. If Joseph proves himself on the practice field day in and day out, he will earn a spot on the field. IMO, Joseph is better than Prude, despite his significant improvements. The problem for Joseph right now, is that Prude will continue to improve because of his PT this season.

IMO, Stevenson, Prude, and Joseph will be competing for the primary cover positions (you have to play alot of nickel in the SEC), with Jackson, Gordon and Child working into the nickel and dime packages. And then there is the injury bug which can bite at any moment (Ask Mario about that one...).

I am telling you right now that Sammy Joseph will be one of our starting corners next year.

I certainly cannot disagree with that. But I have not seen the kid play, so i can't assume that. Chevis Jackson has shown me he has a ton of upside and has made some big time plays. For all we know, Stevenson may end up being just a nickelback, but I think Saban will have no problem figuring it out. I like Prude, and he should be even better next year. All I want is the best playing corner, and there is no doubt Saban will be all over it.
