Good coach on the field, fair recruiter. Ron is at his 16th stop, after leaving LSU he was in the Pros for one year, now at S. Fla.

Corey is known as a good coach and great recruiter. This is his third stop at LSU, counting his playing days. Like I said before, when Neb could close on a kid, they sent Corey. He, Frank Wilson and O can close. It helps to have the LSU on your shirt, the high school coach in your corner, etc.

Saivion Smith, DB, LSU - The nation’s No. 3 cornerback had some thinking he was staying instate to play for Florida State or was going to be the next star from the Tampa area to choose Clemson. In a February national announcement on ESPNU Smith not only announced his top five but also publicly committed to LSU. He’s proven to be ‘very solid’ with the Bayou Bengals ever since, even trying to recruit others for the Tigers. LSU, known as ‘DBU’ led by secondary coachCorey Raymond, attracts the nation’s best at the position with its growing rate of college development into NFL success.

    LSU chasing Mullen, Fulton
The LSU staff is being talked about around the country for their start to the 2016 class, grabbing 17 commitments before July arrived - good enough to put them in the No. 1 spot in the 247Sports Team Rankings.

One of the most impressive hauls thus far has come at defensive back, where the Tigers have commitments from five-star cornerback in Saivion Smith, four-star cornerback Greedy Williams, the nation's No. 1 safety in Eric Monroe and Louisiana's top-ranked safety in Cameron Lewis. Clifford Chattman is also on board as an athlete, checking in at 6-foot-4 and 180-pounds as a rising senior who could stay at safety or slide down to outside linebacker.

So where do things go from here?

LSU defensive backs coach Corey Raymond is clearly focused on two names at cornerback: Louisiana's Kristian Fulton and Florida's Trayvon Mullen.

For Fulton, the 247Sports Crystal Ball favors LSU at 100-percent, and his college decision is expected to be announced before his senior season begins at Rummel this fall.

For Mullen, however, there's no timetable for a decision, but he did give fans some insight into his mindset by releasing his five official visits on Thursday morning. LSU, Ohio State, Florida State, Oregon and TCU are all slated to get official visits from the four-star cornerback for a game this fall. Mullen has not circled on the calendar which dates the visits will take place.

At 6-foot-2 and 175-pounds, Mullen is ranked as the No. 4 cornerback prospect in the country, and his Crystal Ball favors LSU (64%) over Florida State, Alabama, Clemson and Florida.

    And here's the kicker.

If LSU lands both Mullen and Fulton, the Tigers will have secured three of the top four cornerbacks on the 247Composite - a first since the release of the industry-wide composite rankings.

Summer Top 50 - No. 23 Ed Paris
    [IMG]
    Ben LovePublisher, TigerSportsDigest
A new projected starter at corner crashes TSD's summer countdown at No. 23. Sophomore Ed Paris brings a lot of potential, and swagger, to the position.

Because everyone loves to rank things, and because summer is the best time to argue and debate, TSD is spending the coming weeks through the end of July rolling out its top 50 LSU football players for the coming season.

Many are seasoned veterans and a select few are new to the roster, but all 50 Tigers figure to make an impact on the gridiron in 2015.

So we hope you enjoy this list, updated once each weekday and compiled by the TSD staff of Ben Love and Hunter Paniagua (who, naturally, had disagreements of their own along the way).

Today the countdown continues at No. 23 with a new projected starter at cornerback, sophomore Edward Paris ("Ed").

    REASON FOR OPTIMISM

Paris has potential for days and fits the mold of cornerback LSU and position coach Corey Raymond prefer. First off, there's the size of this former Texas prep standout. At 6-foot-1 and 208 pounds, Paris isn't as lean as some of LSU's other tallish corners (think Tharold Simon, Mo Claiborne), but he is a very physical player.

He excels in press coverage and by all accounts is a willing tackler, a lot like the guy starting on the opposite island - junior Tre'Davious White. Paris took control of the second corner job this spring, for now having distanced himself from talented rookie Kevin Toliver (No. 44 on this countdown). Competition will resume in August's Fall Camp, but Paris certainly enters the fray with his nose out in front.

Something else Paris possesses that's a little less tangible or measurable is his poise/confidence. Never afraid to get in his opponent's ear, Paris is a talker between the lines. Off the field, though, in interviews, he displays a poise that's rare amongst athletes his age. Here's betting that internal demeanor, mixed with some swagger directed toward LSU foes, is a good mix for a player set to make his mark over the next two to three years in the Tigers' secondary.

    STILL LEFT TO PROVE

He did play in all 13 games last fall, but Paris - almost exactly like the player ranked directly behind him on this countdown (Lewis Neal, No. 24) - wasn't counted on very much to produce. Paris made just three total tackles on the campaign with no other statistics to boot while entertaining mostly special teams duties.

It's also fair to question how Paris will perform within an evolving defensive scheme under new coordinator Kevin Steele. The primary coverage strategy under John Chavis was man-to-man, trusting corners to jam their man and stay with their man long enough for the defensive front to get home. Time will tell if Steele sticks with those principals or if more zone coverage is in the offing for the Tigers.

Then, as with almost every position on the field, there's the competition. Paris stands second in line at cornerback presently, behind White, but he'll have to continue to fend off Toliver as well as another talented incoming freshman in Donte Jackson (No. 27 on our list). He's fortunate LSU is young at cornerback in 2015, giving few experienced options to test him, but the Tigers haven't been afraid to turn to freshmen at the position before.

Which SEC East/West recruiter is killing it this offseason?

Recruiting is a grind for every college football coach.

It’s a year-round quest to sign the best players who will win your program a championship. But some coaches thrive in this arena. Some coaches can go into a living room and win over the hearts of Mom and Dad, and they’re paid very well for closing the deal.

Let’s look at two assistants who are tearing it up on the recruiting trail for the class of 2016:

Corey Raymond, LSU defensive secondary coach
Corey Raymond continues to turn heads at LSU. The Tigers are known for having elite secondaries, and Raymond, personally, is known for being one of the best recruiters in the country, regardless of conference or position. And he’s having himself another banner year.

Raymond and LSU are rebuilding their secondary for the future. The Tigers currently have four defensive backs committed who are all rated as four-stars or higher, and Raymond has been directly involved in the recruitment of them all. Raymond is five-star cornerback Savion Smith’s primary recruiter. The Florida prospect committed to LSU early in the game, and Smith and his father have raved about Raymond throughout the process. The Tigers also have four-star cornerback Andraez Williams committed. Raymond also aided LSU by helping land commitments from four-star safeties Eric Monroe and Cameron Lewis. Monroe’s from Texas and Lewis is from Louisiana.

But LSU certainly isn’t done at the position either. The Tigers are currently all over four-star cornerbacks Kristian Fulton, who’s from Louisiana, and Trayvon Mullen, who’s from Florida.

LSU currently has the No. 1 class in the country.

Kevin Sherrer, Georgia Sam Linebackers/Star coach
There may be not be a better assistant coach off to a hotter start than Georgia’s Kevin Sherrer. The second-year coach is putting together a massive class for the Bulldogs.

Sherrer’s biggest commit is five-star defensive tackle Julian Rochester. The Georgia native is the No. 7 defensive tackle for the 2016 class and the No. 2 overall player in the Peach State. Sherrer also landed four-star defensive tackle Tyler Clark and four-star defensive end Chauncey Manac. Clark is the country’s No. 22 defensive tackle, while Manac is the country’s No. 6 weak-side defensive end for 2016.

Sherrer also helped the Bulldogs land offensive tackle commit Chris Barnes.

The Bulldogs are also still recruiting the country’s No. 3 overall defensive tackle in Georgia native Derrick Brown, as well as the country’s No. 1 overall player in defensive tackle Rashan Gary.

To say UGA is putting together an impressive defensive line group is understated.
