Rolando Melancon, Ahmad Paige & Jason Peters come to mind. Even though Peters was offered a greyshirt. :hihi:
Looks official, in the LSU news section, NOLA.com has it. High school coach said he is quick, and the strongest player he has ever coached. Said he has unlimited potential.
Rolando Melancon wasn't offered because of grades. Paige was the same way. We got burned on Paige because he ended up qualified and two of our receiver commitments look like they won't get qualified. As for Peters, we simply had better guys on the radar, even though in other years we may well have gone after Peters hard. As for Hagans not being recruited by Georgia or Georgia Tech, it is entirely possible that they think he's a fine prospect, but don't have a spot for him. It's also possible that they differ greatly in his opinion of him than do our coaches.
One of our receivers looks like they won't qualify. Byrd is expected to be here. Paige ran a dissapointing 40 time at the LSU camp, and there were serious questions about his body's ability to add enough weight to play in the SEC (guy was like 160lbs). We simply didn't have him ranked as high as some other prospects. Rivals dropped his stock pretty hard as the season went on. Where did he end up signing? I think he had commited to Florida St, but signed somewhere else.
You're forgetting Bajoie, who was so far from qualifying that no one is even talking about him, and he's been removed from our commitment lists. He's going to JUCO. Benton looks like he won't make it, and Byrd is not guaranteed at this point. Even assuming Byrd gets in, that's still 2 out of 4 recruits not making it at that position. Paige ended up at Oklahoma State.
Ah, I did forget about Bajoie, but he was never expected to make it & the coaches recruited knowing that. We wanted 3 WRs, we'll get 2 (most likely)... I wonder how it will play out this year with DeAndre & Tolliver supposedly having grade issues. How many WR's do you think we want/will take in this class? Judging from the way things are going, I'd guess we want 2, but will take 3 (Tolliver, Surrency, Brown) with the assumption that one won't qualify.
Paige was not even pursued, we didn't get burned because the coaches never felt he could be a contributor in the SEC. Very few players go on to have great careers after we pass on them, maybe Paige will.
That is good news about Benton, but honestly, with all the smoke that's been out there about him and not getting qualified, I'll believe he's qualified when he reports. He's pretty much sunk this season, having missed workouts and 7-on-7 drills, even if he qualifies. Plus, he'll probably be one of those LONG clearinghouse problems. There's pretty much no way he'll catch up on the depth chart for this year. I'd say if he qualifies, it's about 95% he redshirts, which is disappointing because he was a guy who probably would have been a contributor if he'd gotten his stuff together in the classroom. As for this year's recruiting class at WR, I don't know. The good news is that Peterson is not an academic problem. I keep hearing that Brown and Tolliver have academic issues, but just how serious they are is a matter of guesswork. My guess is that we'd take both of them at this point, though. As for Surrency, you have to keep in mind that we'll reserve as spot for Julio Jones until he commits elsewhere. i can't see us taking commits from 4 wide receivers with Jones still on the board. If he goes down to signing day, it might shut out guys like Surrency or Jarboe or Fuller, who might get impatient and look elsewhere. If the staff takes a commitment from one of those guys, it might be at the expense of Brown. I just can't see us taking 5 wide receivers.
