They always have had far superior hardware to the PC's, and you can run Windows on them if you want. So it's really a no-brainer if you can afford it.

Mac viruses have always been around, they just haven't proliferated as fast as their cures have. quicksilver. it's a launcher/all around usefull tool. Especially on a laptop, it helps keep your hands on the keys, not the trackpad for chat use adium. It's as cool and usefull as trillian on the pc, but its free firefox for browsing netnewswire for rss feeds handbreak for ripping movies transmission for bt perian for adding extra codec support to quicktime if you do basic image editing, but photoshop is too expensive, give Pixelmator a try
Give Camino a try for a Mac browser. It reads the very few sites that are a problem for Safari. I have to have the Microsoft Office 2008 suite, Filemaker Pro and the Adobe Creative Suite 3. All are expensive but my office paid for them. Quantum GIS is a free open-source geographic information system. Tons of free mapping data is available online. Google Earth for a free universal mapping tool Aperture for photograph editing and management. Keynote blows away Powerpoint. End Note for citation management is great for writers.
We use Sharepoint; emails from Sharepoint to MSO 2007 is buggy but works great with Mac 2008. Even MS products for MAC are written better......:insane:
