Most states do not recognize common-law marriages at all. A marriage is said to be common-law if the couple acts as if married, but it rarely provide any legal benefits. Polygamists usually only have a license for the first wife. The others are legally single women with children, even though they are treated and considered to be wives by their husbands. A conjoined twin of this sort is difficult for the law to define as a single person or two people.
