Agree with FloridaHawk's comments all the way around. The hotel we stayed at had its own NYE party and my wife made friends with some LSU wives... and before I knew it we were off to their suite for an after, after party.... got to bed around 4 am. We headed out to the game early on New Year's, pulled into our assigned parking lot... and THERE THEY WERE... already partying. You guys are the best. Btw, we noticed Saban's comments after the game where he singled out that dback and said it wasn't the coaches' fault. I thought that was on the cheezy side somewhat. Is that a typical Saban response? Hell, I thought your guys played their hearts out!
Oh yes, that is typical Nick. There was a time when we thought it might be cheesy. In fact, Lynn Amedee, a former OC here was roundly criticised for blaming a loss on a quarterback once. But Nick has always been a very pro-style, businesslike coach. Not a lot of Rah-Rah. His thing is that every player and coach has a job to do and they need to approach it like work. Nick doesn't let players or assistants get away with not attending to business. He never criticises a player for being too slow, or not good enough. But if you've been coached the correct way to do something and you don't do it, Nick will be all over your ass. Including explaining truthfully what happened to the press and fans. The safety missed the coaches call and came up to stop the short pass when he should have followed the receiver deep. The plain truth. This approach has been very successful for Nick at LSU. He treats the players like men, expects them to have an work-ethic like pro's, and makes them responsible for their own actions. These LSU players are not boys playing a game. They are men working at their job.
red55, I certainly understand where you are coming from, but Saban's following post-game comment is silly... "Mental errors are a terrible way to lose, because that means the other guy didn't really physically beat you. You really beat yourself." Mental errors are part of the game, and it is the COACHES jobs to minimize these... the fact is Saban gave virtually ZERO credit to Iowa for playing a tough game... Did he not see how our D-line "Physically" beat the LSU O-Line in the game??? As you can see from my original post here, I have incredible respect for LSU and your fans... as for Saban, I have always been a bit more divided...
I guess we can agree to disagree, but Saban is right. I can understand where you're coming from because it does seem to take away from your team's accomplishment. But, bottom line is - scoreboard. You beat us fair and square no matter how hard it is for some of us to take. As for you're D-line whipping our O-line, I agree your assessment. They were extremely physical, but we did have more rushing yards than you guys even if you take away the 74 yarder, so I guess we can call that battle a draw.
Not to split hairs, but if you take away the 74 yarder (no reason to do that, we gave it up) we had a whopping 47 yards rushing to your 44. Great game, great fans, Tigers. Had a blast down there and look forward to a rematch next year in Pasadena. Please realize the resources that Miles had at OSU and what he will have at LSU...not even comparable, and he built OSU into a respectable program in a very short period of time. If some ask why Russell didn't play more, I think the fact that he spiked the ball with 50 seconds left answers that question. He had a great quarter, but with more PT who knows what other mistakes may have been made to prevent you from being in a position to win. Hell, who knows. Sorry you had to be on that end of things and ecstactic that we were. I jumped up in the bleachers and thought in midair that wasn't the brightest thing to do...I now have a nice reminder of the celebration on my leg. Don't want to talk about the game too much, you guys are well on to moving on to baseball season (yay!) and next year's football team. Best of luck to a very classy bunch and thanks for the great discussion on here the past several weeks. Hopefully the Hawks were able to make a good impression on you and our quest for national respect will continue onward. Go Hawks! Go Tigers! By far my favorite SEC team.:thumb:
Brett I agree with everything you said, the Iowa fans were great, the game was great, the weather was fabulous and the food was great. The only thing I will disagree with was the Spike. I thought it was a very good decision. We didn't want a redshirt freshman running the wrong plays, like a running play that eats up the clock, or a passing play that gets a back tackled in bounds for a loss. Every time I hear some one saying we should have let the clock run down I picture Tulane's RB getting tackled at the 2 yard line vs LSU in I believe 1974 and the clock running out because they didn't stop it earlier and because they didn't throw the ball into the endzone.
A few points. I think Flynn was put in to send a message to Russell. If you saw him on the sidelines during the 3d quarter, you could tell that the decision was killing him. He's probably not displeased Saban is leaving. The difference with Saban calling out players is that Amadee tried to defend a play call he made which might be the dumbest call of all time. It's one thing to say there was a confusion about getting the call in and someone being out of position. It's entirely different to say that Jamie Howard throwing that pass was a good idea. Glad to hear everyone enjoyed themselves. GEAUX TIGERS
