What puzzles me is all those formations where we had 4 WR's that spread the field, why didn't we pound the ball up the middle with Broussard? Everyone could see how worn down their DL was due to lack of depth, and I did notice Wilkerson was able to push out the DT a few times for a quick pass to Vincent. This is the SEC and we have to pound the ball in that sloppy mud.
I am amazed you are not worried whatsoever about the QB situation. I agree moreso with the previous poster that they stacked the line and outnumbered us, daring us to pass. And Randall couldn't do it, with one on one coverage much of the time.
While Broussard is a punishing back to tackle don't sell him short he is also the fastest in this group. AKA can get to the corner quicker and the first guy probably doesn't bring him dowm. JV can cause people to miss but the first guy brings him down often.
Whitworth was getting eaten alive by that nasty spin move of Swancutt's. That guy perfected it over the summer. He was better than last year. Surprised me. We have two weeks for Nick to fix what was wrong with the o-line and QB's. It ain't gonna be easy.
I'm with FightinTiger on this one. It was a position of strength, but even 5 vs. 8 and sometimes 9 is a bit unfair to judge the O-Line by. My hat's off to Swancutt. He said he had something to prove and played with a huge chip on his shoulder. Don't worry about Whit. Everyone has a game where there ass is handed to them. Willie Roaf once gave up 5 sacks in one game to a nobody, Chuck Smith. That one game made his next paycheck. He did nothing for the rest of his short lived NFL career. Happens to everybody. Woe is the nest few guys who line up opposite Big Whit...
I have big worries about the QB also but the O-line did stink it up and the 8 in the box story line is simply not true. We have 4 wideouts for most of the game and 5 on a lot of other plays, OSU couldn't leave 8 in the box in those sets. They had to have either 6 or mostly 7. Our line just couldn't block anyone. Then when we lined up in an I formation, first with Addai, then JV and then finally with Steltz at fullback, we telegraphed that we were going to run up the middle, as we did to no avail. But let's not fool ourselves with the 8 in a box theory, the line just wasn't worth a crap.
I'm with cajdav1 on this one. Go back and watch the tape. There were several times that our OL men were on the ground with their guys chasing our QB. I remember one play in particular where the DT and DE did a simple stunt and our RT and RG ended up flat on their faces on top of each other. Our line stunk in this game. Especially the first half. Could have been the weather and the play calling, but I think that they just weren't ready to play. Saban lit a fire under their butts at half time though and they did better the second half.
