Wasn't Mauck a junior when he left after winning the NC? And yes, JaMarcus is a winner, but the combined records of the teams we have beaten is 11-28 or something. So, junior or not, I think most college QBs at a premier school could beat these teams.

I like JR, but to say he's great is a bit much...

Yes, but he was also 25 years old - not the average junior in college. Plus, he wasn't even a very good quarterback. Some will say that is all we need, "someone who won't lose the game for us". Well those people have short memories because Mauck almost lost us a few games in 03, not too mention he didn't do much against Florida either.

If we could quantify great, say perhaps the top 5 QBs in college right now, then JaMarcus would atleast be debatable to be included in there, and IMO would probably be #3.

In physical talent he is #1, in what he actually does on the field he might be in the top 15.

How do you define what he does on the field?

Name 15 college QBs you would want on your team more than JR.

The only game we played "not to lose" last year was in the Tennessee game. I haven't noticed it at all this year.

You have to be careful with statistics. They are like icebergs. You can only see 10% of what's there. Perhaps JR is not as effective against the SEC elite is because they are better teams with a better defense than the mediocre teams. DUH! Also, there may be other factors such as the offensive line and the ability of receivers to catch the ball. Remember last year? How many passes in the breadbasket or the hands were dropped? fQuite a few. And this year the offensive line has been questionable in their performance. I think JR has problems. No doubt. He maintains too much eye contact with his receivers. That's one problem. Let's see what LSU does for the remainer of the season.

Mauck played minor league for 3 years. Wouldn't you think Mauck being away from the field for 3 years would equallize the four year age difference between the MM and JR? Besides, I'm not saying that Mauck was great or even good, but after his junior year, he had a national title.

I think we have just as good a defense that we had then, so I don't think that argument can be made. However, or running game was pretty good. Now, it's lackluster to say the least...

Well, some may say that JR lost the Auburn game for us by getting tackled in bounds and throwing to a reciever who was tackled at the 5 yard line with no time left. And some may say that he botched the snap at the one against Florida. It's a never ending discussion. You either drink the "JR's the bestestestest ever" koolaid, or you don't. He's good. That's it. No better than Rohan Davey or Matt Mauck, in their own respects.

well, you can argue that those statistics arent the best to determine how skilled a qb is. hell, its tough to tell at all through stats. obviously, each of these qbs have different o-lines, wrs, defenses and, probably most importantly, different coordinators.

JR has incredible natural abilities and the strongest arm in college I've ever seen. There is no one I've seen that can through a rocket while on the run and as accurate as he is with it. His accuracy is unbelievable when he is comfortable. I support JR and am behind him 100% because I know his abilities can carry him far.

But those abilities will only carry him so far. His football mind, thinking fast under pressure, and pulling out the high pressured big games, will need to be developed. He hasn't developed this year as much as I was expecting.

I was expecting him to make decisions faster, not stare down WR's as much, check off defenses and make the correct audibles, and really standout in the big games this year. I haven't seen those expectations met yet.

I will say he does make his decisions a bit faster now and he has learned how to throw the touch pass, sometimes putting too much touch and loft on the ball. His big game performances just aren't there, though and that will really hurt him. It seems JR, Miles, and Jimbo can't get things straight for the big games. Yes the road games have been on the road this year but we should at least win 1 of the 3 tough road games against top 10 teams. If LSU looses to UT, I'm afraid winning the big games will begin to be LSU's pattern.

JR has taken control of games and dominated but never against a quality opponent. Some of it is game plan and schemes developed by the staff, but some of it is JR. In the AU and UF games this year, he would get in a pattern of throwing off his back foot even when he was not pressured, he would try to guide the ball into the WR's, and his accuracy was terrible. But these tendencies didn't show up on the cup cake games. JR is very shakey in the big games. I hope he can break out of that and dominate the UT game, but I'm really sort of wishing that he would go pro so that we could maybe see RP play next year. I just don't have the confidence in JR that we will win the big games that we have a really good chance of winning.

Yeah, if I were an NFL scout, these would be the things I would hinge my grading on. From hike to throw, JR eyeballs only the person the play is designed for, regardless of the fact that they are covered. He rarely surveys the field, and in the NFL, his interceptions would increase 10x as much as they are now.
