My thoughts so far… The best thing that has happened this year is the early losses by Utah, Louisville and Boise State. Having these schools undefeated (and those like them) only poisons the minds of us otherwise totally logical fans. The worst thing that has happened is the total collapse of Oklahoma. We don’t need them great anymore, but we do need them at least competitive enough to beat Texas every year. With Petersen injured, perhaps out, Texas will win… and have the best chance of ANY conference leader to run the table. Even Virginia Tech and, yes, even USC will have tougher “rows to hoe” than Texas. I mention these three because if USC does run the table, there’s a VERY good chance either VT or Texas will become the new Auburn. I doubt if anyone in the Big Ten or the SEC will get through the season without a loss. There are at least six teams in each of these two leagues that have come to play this year… there will be many very good two loss teams. Alabama had an impressive win over the Gators and is being rewarded in the polls, but this is a very good team at best… not a great team… same with Georgia… and while we’re at it… same with Wisconsin… same with Penn State… the list goes on and on. NOW, should Oklahoma jinx Texas AND should ND pick clover with USC… then all bets are off. Hey, if there weren’t gonna be upsets, who the hell would watch????
Just a quick observation. It seems everyone has jumped on the "Alabama is the best team in the SEC" bandwagon. If UGA beats Tenn. this weekend in knoxville, will they then be everyone's favorite to win the SEC? THey still have UF and AU on the schedule but this year has become appealing for them since not only is the SEC championship essentially a home game for them but so is the sugar bowl.
I think if UGA wins Sat vs the Vols they have to be the frontrunner for the SEC East but you can't ever say who the real favorite is until the UT/UGA/UF round robin is over, much like the west with LSU/AU/UA, which many times goes down to the last weekend of the year. That's one of the reasons I love when the SEC has at least 3 very good teams on each side plus a good Ole Miss or Arkie. Especially Arkansas since we play them last every year, it keeps everything in doubt and interesting until the very end. And we haven't seen a total collaspe of OU yet. They are still 1-0 in the Big 12.
Bama has to play three more ranked opponents. Their shallow depth will show before the season is over. Nobody will go undefeated in the SEC this year.
I guess I don't get it. Prior to the Florida game, Alabama was less than impressive in any of their wins. Then they win at home against Florida, a team most observers thought was overly "Meyer-hyped" and, quite frankly, a little low on big time talent. Now Alabama is destined for the Georgia Dome. ... I guess it's a damn good thing Vandy lost.
yeah hawker, that's where i'm coming from. there's alot of season left to deem bama the best. the media is jumping on their favorable home schedule to pick them as a winner, i was just throwing in my 2 cents that i can see the same lauding of UGA if they beat UT on the road this week. also croyle has still got to stay healthy and prothro is a huge loss.
I thought that Florida was over-hyped from the start for one main reason... I didn't think they had a good enough defense to win the SEC. Alabama has a very good defense, as does Georgia. And that is exactly why observers are counting them in as potential SEC Champions. In regards to LSU, the question that remains, from my point of view, is whether or not LSU can upgrade and straighten out the defense before having to face Florida, Alabama and Auburn. If the answer is yes, LSU will probably head to Atlanta. LSU has already played the, "one loss won't knock us out," card. The Tennessee-Georgia game will go a long way to indicate who will head to Atlanta from the East.
Notice I said "I'll believe in them if they go 2-1" over those 3 games and finish out the season 10-1 and in the SEC CG. I'm not a believer yet.
the guy at baylor from UK is guy morriss and actually left them with a winning record. i think he beat a ranked petrino team in doing so. Almost beating A&M last week that gave him his first loss. You must be good to win any games at baylor. As much as I like Weis, ND is playing too far above its head. MSU exposed their defense but somehow brady somehow staged a comeback. that prolly wont happen against USC. they will likely get routed. I like Bama to win the west because of defense and LSU already having a loss gives us no room for another. Nothing impressive about UT except their lines. i dont see enough playmakers on offense to rise to the top nor do I think riggs is as good as he's hyped. Solid team but not good enough. Meyer definitely needs better skill players to fit his system. he is a couple years from having the florida type talent they're accustomed to. If UGA gets solid play from Shockley, the east is theirs i believe. i think they win a close one against the vols this weekend. they are the better team. Ga Tech and NC st play tonight on espn. should be a good one. gotta love those amato oakleys.
