My father-in-law lives in Omaha and is a big Husker fan. He knocks teams that play in a dome and says real football was meant to be played outdoors regardless of the weather. He tries to insinuate that teams from the south can't handle the elements. I usually counter his argument by asking why all those yankees play hockey indoors. Shouldn't it be played outdoors on real ice?...and what the hell is the deal with the Zamboni? Can't those pretty boys play on anything other than nice, smooth ice? This usually shuts him up for a few minutes. He thinks it's great that the baseball season was pushed back because it makes it fair for the teams who have long winters. That's when I usually reply that those cold-weather people must not be as tough as they say. I think it sucks and what is amazing is how the NCAA is worried that a college football playoff format will be detrimental to academics but has no problem continuing baseball well after the spring semester is finished. Once again, it's not about academics or the athletes...it's all about the $$$.
man, that's the one thing i loved about playing baseball in high school. Getting to leave school early for road games.
Don't think it will make much difference. On average, your better ball players come from warm weather cities/states. Mainly, because they can devote more of the year to playing baseball as a kid than the colder weather boys. When it comes time to sign somewhere, these kids usually don't stray far from home, so the talent stays in the warm climates.
Another baseball question - does anyone know why we have scheduled every SEC team for 2008 except Vanderbilt?
I think the rule is more fair, but if NCAA thinks the teams aren't practicing anyway, they're crazy. Anyone who walks by the Box at any time of the day can hear the ping of the players getting in come cuts in the cage. It's not an "organized" practice with Mainieri there and it's player-organized, but still. hitting is hitting.
Yep. We rotate one east team every two years. Why the SEC won't expand from 30 to 33 conference games to solve this problem is puzzling. We would lose three non-conference games, big deal.
