FWIW, Spurrier just got a 700K raise this week pushing him to 4.3. I mention that because UofSC isn't as financially liquid as a lot of schools. The last reporting cycle I looked at had them a little under 370K in the black.
Great question. Trying to go back in time, my guess would be it happened during the decade of the 90s. And more specifically very early 90s. So I will guess Lou Holtz of Notre Dame. Based on that article that came out in 2001, it would appear that Bowden might have gotten bumped over the million mark after the 1993 championship. I would guess he got his 2nd bump to 1.5 million after the 1999 championship. Imagine all the gasping that went on back in the day with such "exorbitant" salaries.
