    My way to early prediction:

    DC= Dewayne Walker

    DL/etc +$$$= Coach O

    Coach O makes 750K his 1st year.

So you have OC Crowton, DC Walker, and 3rd in line our D/L coach making 3/4 of a million dollars?

    Wow.

    WTF

Good grief. Is it just me, or does the pool seem really shallow this year?

And he was a horrible head coach. Also the D under O at ole siss sucked. O as DC would be a big gamble.

got to agree, he can recruit, but way to big an unknown to be a DC. Ole Miss's defense was not good during the time he served as his own DC.

Coach O's biggest asset is as a recruiter from what I hear. Tough 2 argue that issue given the talent at Ole Miss right now. One school of thought is that we don't need him in that capacity at LSU b/c we can get recruits. Another school of thought is that if he goes to another SEC school ( like Tn. ) he'll take enough talent from Louisiana for LSU to feel it, thus we should hire him in some capacity if we can. I have no idea or insight on how this will play out. Waaaaaaay beyond what I can have a credible opinion on. I hope Miles makes a good decision on where the program goes from here.

Not to pick on your post Clair but I am not high on Coach O and I read and hear similar comments about Orgeron all the time so I'm going to use it to make my argument.

Because he was a lousy head coach. He was 10 for 36 at Ole Miss. Only three of the 10 wins he did have were even SEC teams and those were Kentucky, Vandy and MS State. That's worse than Curly bad.

He gets all this credit for being a great recruiter. Sure he brought in some big names at Ole Miss considering how poorly the team was playing. Many of those players never ended up setting foot on campus because they were long shots too. And I don't know how much we can really use his USC recruiting performance as a gauge, we all know that school recruits it's self. But all this being said, I will still give him credit for being a very good recruiter. Fine. However, a very good recruiter is not on the top of our list of immediate needs right now. Last time I checked we had the #1 recruiting class in the county and something like the 65th ranked defense.

Exactly. Just one year removed from Coach O look what basically the same team could do with decent coaching. This emphasizes my point that while he might be good at bringing in talent, he can't do anything with them when he has them. And that is not what we really need right now.

I agree that Orgeron should get credit for the personnel on the team. As far as his actual coaching ability, he gets no credit from his Ole Miss tenure IMO.

I really would like LSU to find a guy known for his intelligence and ability to develop innovative defensive schemes. Coach O is not that guy. He is like a side show. Coach Yaw Yaw? His own fan base made songs to ridicule him. A recruiting coordinator or position coach maybe (although I like the recruiting coordinator we have) , but EO is not the guy we need running the defense.

    my argument to that is:

Marvin Lewis was one of the best DC's in the NFL.

His defense sucks as a head coach.

Being a head coach is WAY different than being a coordinator, so it's very unfair to relate success at one to success at another.

No one knows how Ole Miss would have done this year had O stayed.

What I do know is they had a lot of "close calls" in his career. LSU knows this better than anyone.

Maybe with an actual QB this year, he'd have had the same success?

So is being a head coach a measure of whether he can be a coordinator or not? If it is, then I think we need to look at his performance in that role. Since he has never been a DC, there is not much else to go off of.

As for what might have happened if he stayed...who knows. It's possible the Jerry D could have won a championship in 2000 if he stayed, but not very likely. I'm just going off of the facts we do know.
