It was actually "Pat" Sullivan who won the Heisman for Auburn, and that was in about 1970. There wasn't much competition that year, witness that the runner up was Ed Marinaro from CORNELL!
Clayton will surely be on the Heisman watch in 04 if he stays...if he's around when one of our freshman studs get some PT, look out!
Not to mention the numerous times college football analysts called him, "The best player in the SEC"... Could we start our own Heisman push?!
Bottom line is that last year he only had 749 yards receiving. He may be the best receiver but unless he gets the stats he won't win. Josh Reed should have gotten a few votes IMO. The year Woodson won was a load of crap. Peyton Manning was a much more important player to his team than Woodson and deserved it more.
A WR winning the Heisman is tough. Clayton could do it if he stays for a senior year though, he has been very good leading up to this year and will only get better. Playing some on D will help, not too many players in DIV 1A play on both sides of the ball. Woodson winning the Heisman had more to do with his defensive play (Than the few plays he had on O) and the winning Michigan did b/c of his play. I didn't think Woodson was the best player that season, but I had no problem with him winning the award. He played very good D, plenty of INTs and TDs. RBs and QBs will always have an advantage b/c they control the offense. WRs have less control, so it is harder to see how important they are to the overall team winning. Clayton is a standout player though, and I would be surprised to see him in a Tiger uniform next season. I wish we could keep good players like him, for the full college term.
