I say play him both ways. You need to find a way to get your best athlete on the field. It worked just fine for Chris Gamble at Ohio State.
Well, OSU is playing "Iron-man" football with Chris Gamble. But playing both ways at WR and CB is far less grueling than playing WR AND Safety. Safeties have to "bring some lumber" when needed--which is normally on every running play. I just don't think Clayton should expose himself, and his body to that--Especially since he's our #1 wideout. Someone else needs to step up in the Fall (if they haven't already).
You're right he didn't tear up but he contributed a lot to the team. he had 58 tackles. He had more tackles than Marcus Spears and Jeremy Lawrence. So you can't really blame all this on Jack. Also the Runner should never get past the D-Line and the LB's. Just a side note Randall Gay had 64 tackles.
Another aspect of this is media coverage. IF Saban plays Clayton both ways in several games and IF he excels in both, you can be sure to see stories on him on ESPN, CBS, etc. a la Gamble, Woodson and Bailey. Such media coverage can only help Clayton by educating more people about his abilities, thereby increasing his potential for post-season awards, thereby appreciating his stock relative to (Saban term) the NFL. Of course, that's all just in addition to helping the team on the field, which is the number one priority.
