    THANK YOU

    Bayou and JLF,

You have both just stated for yourselves a point that I was trying to make on the Smack board.

By the way, your current starting quarter drives an Escelade.......

Free agency, that is basically what paying college athletes would end up being. Anyone here have anything good to say about free agency in pro sports?

    Re: THANK YOU

Current starting QB Matt Mauck can probably afford to buy his own Escalade from the bonus money he got when he was in the Chicago Cubs organization before quitting baseball and returning to college.

That's what I was thinking too. Peyton Manning drove an Odls Bravura while at Tenn I believe and his father could afford that too. Not every player in Div 1 is flat broke and from a poor family.

    I was speaking of Randall

I was not talking about Mauk. I am not sure what he is sporting these days. Though if any of you think he has a dime left from baseball???!!!! He was a 6th round pick, no signing bonus to speak of if any, and played rookie league for two years and single a for two years. There is a reason those leagues have dorms and feed their athletes. They couldn't survive on the trivial salaries those guys get.

Sorry if I was wrong about who your starter is, hope I ddin't offend anyone.

Unlike the NFL or the NBA drafts a 6th round pick in the MLB draft is pretty high on the totem pole. A 6th round pick won't get millions as a signing bonus but it could easily be in the hundreds of thousands. If Mauck saved his bonus money or invested it wisely he could easily afford to drive a top of the line automobile.
Its true that the salaries for minor league players is not a lot but for a player drafted in the first 8 or 10 rounds the signing bonus money is decent enough to provide a nest egg.

There is a very good chance that Mauck comes from a well off family. Even if they aren't rich, he probably has money left over from baseball...

    Here's a story I heard:

I knew a guy here in Texas that went to UT. He said he went to one of those athletic parties. Chris Simms showed up in his escalade. No one thought anything of that because of who his dad is. But then, Cedric Benson arrives in the very same type of Escalade...Not saying he was "given" that. But it happens everywhere.

As Rutgers recently proved, no one is completely innocent. I firmly believe Nick Saban runs a clean program...but no program is completely 100% clean...no way.

Agreed. Unless you are a college senior, 6th round money can be quite good. VERY good if the right team gets you. It can also be VERY good if an average income team doesn't have many picks in the first 5 rounds. I'm quite certain that Mauck had enough left over to buy an Escalade.

Someone may have already pointed this out, but Pat Dye was a Bryant assistant and he beat the Bear too (1982). Probably would have done it another time or two, but Bear retired after the '82 season.

Why would anybody on anybody on this board or any other except for maybe ND want to get into a pissing match with Bama. Yeah their cheaters and croooks, and on and on and on, but you know what they win. They still have 11 more national titles than we do, and a hell of a lot more SEC championships. I am die hard Tiger fan and unlike some of you posters I cannot rationalize a 31-0 beating and a 26-0 beating a few years back with "Oh it's ok b/c they're cheaters." Maybe it makes you feel a little better when your leaving good ol' TS, but I still feel like s@&t. Here's to beating those redneck elephants in Tuscaloosa this year.
