He didn't have the talent at Nebraska that he had or will have here. Obviously speaking, talent makes all the difference in the world, if you can develop it, and he's proven that he can.
Ask most UT fans and they were glad to see Third and Chavis leave. The coments I got from the majority of them I know is that he was good for a while, then ran his course and it was time for him to go. There are plenty of games in his tenure, even this year, where our Defense looked every bit as inept as our offense and cost us big in big games. Clemson and peach bowl is certainly one of them. These coaches get paid a LOT of money. I never like to see any coach, but particularly a non HC hold the school up for more money. I live in Spartanburg SC, in Clemson territory. There is a reason Kevin Steele was canned at Clemson......... LSU does not want him. We will survive without Chavis. Pendergrast seems to be a very strong option, throw in Ogeron as a DL coach and I think the hire becomes a lot sweeter. Miles has to ack fast and get the hire "right" to really help salvage what what we can with the current defensive recruits and those that still want to be at LSU. I did see that J Rascoe made a comment after the game that went something like this, "you choose a school because of the players on the team and relationships you have, not necessarily the coaches." Coaches come and go, I hope some of our current players and committed recruits keep talking like that, because it is true. Picking a school based just on the coaches can be a huge dissappintment for these kids when coaches move on.
I've heard both sides and still don't like the way that went down. I also don't like his personality. That being said I think he would make a very good DC and is a top notch recuiter. I don't see him taking a DL job. The coaching profession is weird strange thing happen daily. I think Miles is smart enough to let what happened go if he needs someone like Orgeron. However Orgeron is a head case and may just be stupid enough to turn Miles down if offered. I'd like to see the hire happen quickly, but I'm more interested in getting it right. Both Orgeron and Pendergast seem like quality candidates, hopefully Miles can reel a good one in.
I don't think he held out for more money. I think he wanted something long term and didn't like the way the athletic department handled his contract. This is more of a slight on Joe Alleva than anything.
